Race, Ethnicity, & Culture

Beliefs about race and ethnicity influence our cultures, politics, and relationships.  What is race?  What is ethnicity?  This group explores those concepts.

Welcome!

Racism and the effects of ethnocentrism are alive and well in the 21st century.  Racism and humanism are incompatible by definition.

The most human, and humane, thing that we can do is acknowledge and support the humanity of people who are different from ourselves.  Curiosity about what makes us human, by necessity, includes curiosity about our human ethnic heritage.

We are incredibly enriched by immersing ourselves in a diverse world.  We are intellectually and emotionally impoverished when we exclude others who are not our mirror image.

This discussion group includes many topics about race and ethnicity.  Feel free to comment to new threads, or resurrect old threads, if any spark your interest.

My 2 cents. Daniel W.

I took me months to correct mine, I added the 'e' on the end. I did keep the picture the same just in case.

The former member of this discussion group, now known as "Double Standards ??" has a profile listing as being a woman form England. His former names included "Blackman", "Freedom of Speech", "Censored", and others. He, or she, was suspended from this discussion yesterday due to hijacking a thread for use in a personal argument. He or she was warned several times, and had been in the past.

I tried to the best of my ability to return the discussion to original topic, and to civility. My skills only go so far.

I truly regret having had to suspend anyone from the group.

I love that Lily Allen song - I have it on my ipod and play it in the car, singing along.

I'm sure this vid has been posted somewhere on A/N, but it's worth posting again...

I just find myself singing this tune every time I hear some shithead go on about the evils of gay marriage.

In other news, a Facebook friend just responded to one of my posts, "If Homosexuality is a disease, I'm calling in gay to work tomorrow."

I like it. "Gee Boss, I was catching up on my episodes of 'V' and, well, Elizabeth Mitchell in tight jeans and a leather jacket. I'm going to have to call off gay for a couple of days until it wears off."

If he doesn't come from the right 'class', he wouldn't have had the experiences to prime himself for the miracle.
