Race, Ethnicity, & Culture

Beliefs about race and ethnicity influence our cultures, politics, and relationships.  What is race?  What is ethnicity?  This group explores those concepts.

Racism and the effects of ethnocentrism are alive and well in the 21st century.  Racism and humanism are incompatible by definition.

The most human, and humane, thing that we can do is acknowledge and support the humanity of people who are different from ourselves.  Curiosity about what makes us human, by necessity, includes curiosity about our human ethnic heritage.

We are incredibly enriched by immersing ourselves in a diverse world.  We are intellectually and emotionally impoverished when we exclude others who are not our mirror image.

This discussion group includes many topics about race and ethnicity.  Feel free to comment to new threads, or resurrect old threads, if any spark your interest.

My 2 cents. Daniel W.

That's a great story about the heroic James A. Fields.  What a tremendous life.  I'm glad he's recognized in our history and that his home is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Thanks for bringing his story to this group, Daniel.

From WaPo, an inspirational bio of James A Fields, a black man with the same name as the modern Nazi sympathizer (terrorist) who plowed his car into demonstrators.

The difference is, the earlier James A Fields was born in 1844, and rose " from slavery to become a successful lawyer and property owner and a member of the Virginia General Assembly".... (very interesting article)...

"Fields had acquired great property wealth... owned at least 25 properties in Virginia, according to Encyclopedia Virginia. He died in 1903. Five years later, four doctors acquired permission from the Fields family to use the top floor of his elegant two-story red brick house in Newport News. The house, built in 1897, became the first hospital for black patients in that city."

Two women running a Portland food cart, are politically-corrected out of business because of their appropriation of Mexican style burritos.  Washington Post.  I can't be politically correct about this - I don't believe that two white women making tortillas in a food truck is taking away jobs or prestige from Mexican people.  I've been in all sorts of restaurants and food vendors that had people preparing the food, who were not the ethnicity of the food being prepared, such as having ethnic Mexican cooks preparing Chinese and Thai food, or Chinese cooks preparing Italian food.  What difference does it make?  Just enjoy the food, and if there is a different take on the flavor or preparation, such as Korean Tacos, that's great too.  Just enjoy and explore.

NY Times editorial, "How Interracial Love is Saving America".  Ever since I left the rural midwestern enclave that in my youth, that I claimed was surrounded by the "Corn Curtain", I sought enlightenment, variety, wisdom, perspective, by expanding my ethnic horizons, including dating, romance, and sexuality.   I would never say "I don't see color", because that's as silly as saying "I don't see sex or gender", but knowing and loving someone who is not one's own ethnicity, makes it all seem very ordinary and normal, pretty quickly.  At least that was my experience.  I wouldn't have lived life any other way.

The elephant in the room people are afraid to talk about and don't want to admit exists.

Defy ethnic stereotypes and expectations.  This video is from the show "Mongolia's Got Talent".

My favorite part is the 3rd song, even though it's totally in Mongolian, Michael Buble, reborn!

This is an interesting lady. I wonder what makes her tick. She's as white as Ivanka Trump, decides she's really black, and now on food stamps. She claims she was too black for her husband, who was black.  Plus she re-named herself an  African version of "A gift from the gods"
