The Institute for Public Policy Research warns that global human impacts have together reached crisis.

Environment in multiple crises - report

....human impacts have reached a critical stage and threaten to destabilise society and the global economy.

Scientists warn of a potentially deadly combination of factors.

These include climate change, mass loss of species, topsoil erosion, forest felling and acidifying oceans.

... these factors are "driving a complex, dynamic process of environmental destabilisation that has reached critical levels.

The authors urge three shifts in political understanding: on the scale and pace of environmental breakdown; the implications for societies; and the subsequent need for transformative change.

They say since 1950, the number of floods across the world has increased by 15 times, extreme temperature events by 20 times, and wildfires seven-fold. [emphasis mine]

Society is already quivering, from inequality, as if threatening to explode from decomp gasses.

Richest 0.00025 percent now owns more wealth than bottom 150 millio...

Consolidation of wealth at the very top ..."it’s consolidating power in the hands of the nation’s billionaires, who are increasingly using their riches to purchase political influence.”

...  adults in the bottom 60 percent of the wealth distribution “saw their share of the nation’s wealth fall from 5.7 percent in 1987 to 2.1 percent in 2014.”

That's another threat multiplier, don't you think?

Book "The End of Ice."

Interview on Democracy Now.

The author says that 40% of insets have became extinct in the past twenty years. He says all all ground insects in Puterto are extinct and it's going on in  Costra Rica  and the Amazon, among other things as well.

Methane from melting permafrost likely will likely result in runaway climate change.

Something that pisses me off is hearing from  Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetairum about terriforming Mars.   We aren't able to terriform earth.   I think his and NASA's research should be redirected.

It's probabably impossible with fossile fuel dumping campaing contributions for senators who have absolutely no science background or care to learn about it.

Also are whores for the fossile fuel industry for campaing dollars.

I agree that talk about offworld development is a red herring, distracting from our real challenges.

With so much in space winning the attention of so many, offworld development is more than a red herring. In Congress, it wins funding by taxpayers.

With America’s capitalism selecting for sociopathy, another population “bottleneck” will result in evolution’s replacing Homo Not Very Sapiens with Homo Sociopathicus.

We care, but the universe doesn’t.

I think it's not just American capitalism selecting for sociopathy, but all Dominator (hierarchical, violence-based) societies. Look at Russia - Putin, oligarchs, etc.

The US government wants more pollution than four major automakers. Source: NYT editorial.

Only Wannabe King Donald could do that.
