In 17 years we could reach 2°C rise!

Nations Change Too Slowly to Combat Climate Change

The world is already on its way to a warmer future, and without radical change, experts said yesterday, that temperature rise soon will reach crisis levels.

Scientists estimate that the planet has already warmed by about 0.8 degree Celsius since the 1850s, and new projections put temperature rise as high as 4 degrees by the middle of the 21st century if current emissions levels persist.

"We are on the wrong track in terms of global environmental management," Ishii said yesterday at a discussion hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. "We are dangerously close to the limits of safe planetary boundaries, and we are racing with time."

According to a recent report by the GEF Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP), at current emissions levels, warming could reach 2 degrees Celsius by 2030 and up to 6 degrees before the end of the century. [emphasis mine]

I'll be 85 years old when we cross the 2°C threshold. I didn't expect that would happen within my lilfetime. Not something to look forward to. Dying before 85 was never something I imagined as a good thing.

How old will you and your kids be in 17 years? Recall that 6°C is predicted to guarantee the end of civilization, projections are saying that business as usual will cause that  in 87 years. Is that what you want for your grandchildren?

I'll be 86. Always led a frugal, green life, tried and still try to make low impact on the environment. Often thought that my lifestyle was useless in the face of all the abuse of what we've got, but never stopped recycling etc. Never bought a car. One thing is the holiday I booked: it will be the second time in an airplane for me - not very green, but two days in the train is too much. Glad I haven't got children; they wouldn't have much to look forward to.
