Warm spring may result in gentle breakup
"Following the warmest March Alaskans have ever felt, forecasters are predicting a mellow transition from ice to water for most big rivers in the state.
"Things don’t always go that way during spring breakup, when chunks of river ice freed from the cold grip of winter can lock up in river bends and back up water into communities.
"Already this spring, weak river ice fractured and dissolved early enough to set new records in the Nenana and Kuskokwim ice classics. In both contests, people bet on when a tripod standing on nearby river ice will fall as the ice disintegrates."
Paul Beckwith interview
The "Hothouse Earth" study expects average global temperature to settle between 4 and 5C hotter, even if the Paris Climate Accords were carried out. Sea levels would go up 10-60m. Even our best climate plan takes us to disaster.
Here's a link to Superfund sites in the U.S. Of course the polluters don't pay for the cleanup of such sites. Most will remain toxic because there is no tax money for the cleanup. The taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for the cleanup. The companies that poluted there should be forced even into bankrupccy into cleaning the toxins up.
On that note check this out

Temperature is higher in the Arctic. My big ugly arrow points to 2018, which I compare to two previous warm years 2017 and 2012.

Thanks for the temperature outlook, Joan.
Thanks for the Arctic News blog, Chris. Sam Carana is on the alarmist end of the spectrum, but cutting edge climate research keeps getting closer to his alarmist position, doesn't it.
I personally felt today as if the US government is devolving, displaying overt corruption and dangerous political entanglements with Russia and Saudi Arabia, in move for fossil fuel interest domination. This almost guarantees locking in irreversible climate destabilization past the point where human action could make a difference. If we hit 1.5°C rise by 2030, that alone is enough to melt all of the Tibetan Plateau permafrost, and very likely to trigger a big methane release at the East Siberian Shelf. People don't realize how fragile is our civilization. Fukushima-like events could happen from floods too, or even from social unrest. Today felt like a step-change in risk. See also my political letter.
I doubt we'll be extinct by 2026, but we could - by then - live on planet progressively pushing us toward that end. <sigh>
Will This Winter Be Mild or Wild? Here's What We Can Expect
Chris, perhaps you're thinking of the Mosuo or Na people in southwest China, who commonly practice "walking marriage" or "visiting marriage": extended matrilineal families living together, where young women get their own bedrooms and can freely invite lovers for nighttime visits. Couples don't live together and don't get formally married, and biological fathers have a much smaller role than do mothers in the lives of their children; men care for their nieces and nephews in their own family home. 'Some older Na report having upwards of 30, 40, even 50 partners throughout their lifetime" and despite these changes [towards common serial monogamy, in the face of cultural integration with the Han Chinese], "notions of exclusivity are not entrenched, and the Na language has no word for 'jealousy'."' (Wikipedia)
Will humans be extinct by 2026?
Not only humans, but many species.
It's the sixth age of mass extinction.
There are many scientific articles about this.
Having more human [babies] and human population seems to be 'controversial.'
Why is human population growth such a contentious subject?
Will religious groups, or economists get that over population is a problem?
Perhaps the best way to have a relationship is to not get married which appears to be a contract for ownership.
I have a friend who was married five to ten years ago. No one has heard from him since then - including his family.
I've heard speculation that men are more likely to isolate women (wives) than women to men.
In that context where there is a dominant partner perhaps women may culpable as men often are accused to.
I haven't looked at the statistics - either way it's despicable to isolate a person from their friends and family.
As a human species my thoughts are we are programed for monogamous serial relationships.
Having written that I read that a culture in China allows women to take on multiple partners (sorry I don't recall the culture).
In the current day of knowledge of sexually transmitted disease is a hazard.
Jealousy also is a factor with multiple partners.
To throw this another way Parental Alienation Syndrome from my reading is usually directed from women towards men - at the child's expense.
As a 'joke' one partner is difficult to deal with - along with the 'in-laws' and what not.
Having sexual relations with multiple partners simultaneously may be suicidal.
...women (and men) in open marriages, ....
My wife and I were two of them.
