Ethics and The Atheist

Ethics and The Atheist

A place to discus ethics from an atheist point of view. Atheists need to be prepared to respond when a theist claims that only morals and ethics come from a god. A place to understand the difference between natural and supernatural ethical systems.

Exactly, Wayne.  I take pleasure in doing good things for other people, especially when they don't expect it.  Perhaps some people would think I'm selfish, but it makes me feel good as well.  Of course, I don't help other people just to make myself feel good.  It's just a nice gesture to make someone's day better.  That's what civilized people do!

Doing the right thing for the right reason is the best way to live. I hate hearing ppl talk about doing God's work. I just want to yell "Are you F-ing kidding!" Why can't ppl do good deed bc good is the way to live your life? Not bc you will get a reward. In some way I don't care how the good deed gets done as long as it gets done. I just hate giving credit to a imaginary deity.

Donald, I agree, " Society is changing it, not the church!"

Comment by Donald L. Engel on February 2, 2016 at 5:51pm

Society sets the moral code, not some religious faction.  I cover this in my book, "It's Time For A Talk".  For example, we don't stone homosexuals to death anymore, we allow them to marry, and we vote them into public office along with heterosexuals.  Of course the church is screaming and digging in its heels throughout all of this, as can be seen on TV with the lady who refused to issue a marriage license, but they are slowly accepting it.  Society is changing it, not the church.

Hi, Steph!  My computer crashed almost 3 weeks ago, and I'm having a terrible time learning how to use this silly MacBook,  Haven't had much time or energy to think about anything else....but this is a fascinating topic, and I do want to discuss the silly notion of the buybull (or any other "holey" book) being a useful manual for living.

I'll be back!

Here is a repost from Steph:

""The BTake some time and put the Bible on your summer reading list. Try and stick with it cover to cover. Not because it teaches history; we've shown you it doesn't. Read it because you'll see for yourself what the Bible is all about. It sure isn't great literature. If it were published as fiction, no reviewer would give it a passing grade. There are some vivid scenes and some quotable phrases, but there's no plot, no structure, there's a tremendous amount of filler, and the characters are painfully one-dimensional. Whatever you do, don't read the Bible for a moral code: it advocates prejudice, cruelty, superstition, and murder. Read it because: we need more atheists — and nothin' will get you there faster than readin' the damn Bible

I am reposting Daniel's quote:

Justice is the only worship.
Love is the only priest.
Ignorance is the only slavery.
Happiness is the only good.
The time to be happy is now,
The place to be happy is here,
The way to be happy is to make others so.
Wisdom is the science of happiness
