Maybe this is ot the best place for this, but not understanding this site, not even what blog is supposed to mean I will place it here.

Missionaries!  Giving to missions etc...  I have always chosen to help those who need it.  I basixally ran my business with illegal aliens, because they have to eat too.  At the present time I am living in the Dominican Republic speaking the Spanish I learned from those same illegals.  But here in retirement i would like to do something to help. This missionary effort does not invlude any gods, nor goddesses either for all that.  I wish to build a fish and vegetable farm here in the ghetto of the Haitians who are the poorest of the poor.  The other evening I was driving down the road in the ghetto and in front of me was a truck selling chicken guts, blobs of chicken fat and their feet for a few pennies per pound out of a dirty bucket. If I can get funded with this campaign it will not be for my own enrichment, but to sell fresh fish and vegetables at cost.  It will employ probably 6 local people while it produces a ton of fish and 5 or 6 tons of fresh vegetables each month once it is up and running.

So, are there any expats around? Those Americans who for whatever reason choose to live outside the USA?

SDAs, like all religious believers, make assumptions about what's real instead of investigating it. As such, there's no argument that they can make with respect to the veracity of their claims.

After finally removing myself from clutches of mythology I have become an anti-theist, because I firmly believe that religion, that is all religions, harm humanity in sinister and diabolical ways, such that religion in its entirety should be left on the trash heap of history.

What I find most galling, most disturbing, is when teaching this crap to children, they are purposely forcing the child's mind to accept something as true that can't be verified. As that child grows it will have to work extra hard to be able to determine fantasy from reality, and it may never completely return to a state of not believing in the alleged supernatural. This is child abuse. And this is wrong. You do NOT teach a child to accept non-answers. You do NOT teach a child that critical thought and investigation are only necessary when NOT dealing with religion. The insistence upon acceptance without evidence, combined with the threat of permanent damnation and torturous destruction, go beyond the pale when it comes to child abuse.

I know what you mean, Deryl. Every argument points back to the Bible, but the arguments are useless if you don't believe the premise that the Bible is the word of God... I think sometimes they try to convince us because they're trying to convince themselves, to deal with the cognitive dissonance of trying to hold contradictory beliefs.

How about a dating site for us?  Or maybe a forum for those singles among us who are looking for someone?

I still get emails etc from my ex-wife who divorced me 28 years ago trying to prove that the Seventh day is the Sabbath. She is incapable of understanding that I have gone so far beyond arguing such petty subjects that it isn't funny!

Like my sister once said People are crazy if they think that because I am a woman I have to spend half a day stuffing bread up a turkey's ass!

Hi Deryl, I agree I wish that the ex SDA board was more active, too.  There's so much "unique" about having come from that peculiar culture-- or at least so we were taught.  Anyway, xmas will be weird and uncomfortable for me as I'm a closeted atheist (hence the pseudonym) with entire family SDA.  Except for my 2 grown kids who are so uncomfortable with their parents' mixed marriage that no one dares approach anything close to the subject.

I've decided to go along with whatever the crowd does, which I assume is to celebrate xmas.  My compromise way of dealing with it is to work up the nerve to inform my husband, without offending his sensitivities, that I will do the cooking and cleaning, but after 40 years of my doing everything, this year any shopping or decorating that takes place will be done by him.  We'll see.

Season's greetings.  :-)

I had thought there was more activity and interest here than I see. What could one do to liven it up a bit? Add a few threads?  I cannot see how to start a thread here, but if someone would start a few it may help:  What are you doing for Xmas now that you aren't having an Adventist Xmas?  Tree? Presents?  Turkey? Loma Linda cutlets?  Trying out a Ham since it is one of the big Xmas things in the USA?

Hey, I'm Alex, I'll be around every week or so to help support.

I used to haunt these forums when I was transforming my beliefs, which was 4 years ago now.

Born and raised Australian Seventh-Day Adventist, Atheist at 21.

I'd like to pay it forward somehow.
