I'm still in the process of leaving "the fold". I stopped attending the church in 2013, but I'm looking into removing my membership and dis-fellowshipping myself to totally free myself from the…Continue

@emery, i just made the realization that I don't believe anymore a little while ago, we still attend church (the last 2 sabbaths not though for different reasons), partly because my husband is still not really decided on where he stands, partly bc I work at the church school where our oldest son attends, and partly bc all our friends are there and they start asking questions of course if we don't go. I totally get the "its your entire social life" thing. that's my boat too.

Hi all. I'm new here. It's so good to find a group for people who leave SDA behind and become atheists! I left the church in the mid-80s, after giving it 10 valuable years of my life. Looking back, those years seem like a kind of prison now.

I'm concerned that there are so many ex-SDAs out there who go on to other churches. While I get some of their reasoning - particularly those who want to stay christian - my reasons for leaving were significantly different and I don't think other churches cut the mustard.

Basically, I finally LEFT when I discovered that much of what I'd been taught was a load of bollocks (and that religion itself is false). Lies and half-truths. And god is nothing short of a sociopath!

But having said all that, it's great to connect here!

Finally, one I could share on my actual profile, not just on my Antitheism page. This is is an absolute corker but only an ex Sevvie would understand! :)

Hi Emery, same here. I regularly attend the church with my wife and my daughter. Church has become a family already.

Hey Emery,

I am largely in the same boat as you.  I still attend church with my wife.  There are still people within the church that I consider friends, but I have been working on developing social connections outside of church.  It helps.

Thanks for the reply. I used to downplay the teachings. Now, when brought up, I try share corollary or contrasting teachings from other religions and modern culture (including science) that are just as, or more valid.

Adventism values family friendships and healthy living to a high degree - Some of it too much. but overall, I find those aspects of the lifestyle fulfilling. They are also share a common (not everyone of course) for the physical needs and well being of others. Their ADRA program, (while I am ambivalent at best about any church state arrangement) is all about helping people with their physical needs.

Sorry for the auto correct. I cannot see the screen where I type either.

My wife and kids are still Adventist. Given that the church is pretty much our entire sicial life, i still attend church with them.
I presume there ae others in this same boat or have sailed these waters before? What is/was your method of coping or changing your social structure to ne more even and fair?

I don't drink alcohol too frequently, but on "Sabbath" morning, a stiff drink on the sly always helps.
