Ex-Mormon Atheists

There seem to be a few of us ex-mo's in the Nexus and it is good to share the particular intricacies of extracting oneself from Mormonism.

Joni, I also couldn't get up and say I knew the church was true, because logically, I didn't.  I only believed.  I knew it was a belief and not knowledge.

Glad your brain kicked in, Joni!

I'd have to say that 3 things that made a big hit in my desire to be a mormon were:

1) That convenient revelation that black people were OK being let into the church.  I never understood why they weren't allowed in.

2) 'Testimony Sunday'...  I just couldn't get up there and say the words that this was "the one true church and Joseph Smith is a true prophet (yada yada)".  I just didn't feel right about any of this...

3) In an interview prepping to go on a mission they asked me if I masturbated...  WTF!  After that interview I never went back.

Guess you could say that walking out of the church that day was the first big step down the yellow brick road to atheistvill.

All Hail James Randi!  A true revelator.

Revelations are so timely huh?

"I feel a revelation coming on."  Good one, Patricia.

That's why I use the term, morons.

A more likely exchange:

Mormon 1 - "Gay Mormon teens are committing suicide in record numbers because of our homophobic doctrine."

Mormon 2 - "They're killing themselves? So what's the problem?"

Interestingly the first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, includes a critical depiction of some of the early Mormons' misdeeds.

As Kurt Andersen said of The Book of Mormon in Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire, "It's a doozy."

Yes, that's how my grandfather ended up in Cardston Alberta, his family & was among the congregation running away from Utah & violence/hatred in 1887. He was 13, but he, his father, & others kept diaries, which my grandmother had printed into a hardcover book in the 70's. Cardston was founded after their bishop Card & my grandfather was part of building the temple there as an adult..
