There seem to be a few of us ex-mo's in the Nexus and it is good to share the particular intricacies of extracting oneself from Mormonism.

Tourette's syndrome opera was pretty much an on-the-spot made up thing, and it shifted towards nastier and more blasphemous when my brother and I grew up and went on trips ourselves without our true-blue Mormon mother. We haven't gone on a car trip together since he got married 12 years ago, and I can't really remember most of the songs - and most of the ones I can are not acceptable or printable here...the recipe's easy enough. Take a hymn (or any other well known tune) keep a few identifying lyrics, and replace the rest with as much vile-ness, political incorrectness, and offensiveness as you can possibly dream up.
I'd like to see the lyrics to those songs SDF. Especially the mentionable ones :)
Its funny you mention hymns. I havent been in an LDS church for 31 years (and still recovering- that s)ays something). I know all the hymns, but my brother and me invented a car travelling game we have dubbed "Tourettes synd.rome opera" where we sing pop songs, old standards and mormon church hymns but replace the lyrics with such vile blasphemous and profane lyrics it would curl your ears. Some (mentionable..."put your shoulder to the wheel - get run over", "pioneer chickens", several versions of "Book of moron stories", "piss, was thelittle stream as it hurried down my leg." We would get in all kinds of trouble with church songs. lol.
I went on a mission to Scotland from 1964 to 1966. I now wish I could go back and apologize to those I preached stupidity to.
Emily you're right about the conditioning. I have to admit I know the rest of the song. In fact, I could easily sing along to any hymn if I was to end up in a church.
Hey, remember this one? Sing along! "I hope they call me on a mission, when I have grown a foot or two. I hope by then I will be ready to teach and preach and learn as missionaries do!" HA HA HA. I can't believe that's still in my head. What effective indoctrination they use!
I like to say "You can take the girl out of the Mormon Church, but you can't take the Mormon Church out of the girl". I haven't been active since I was 17, and I'm about your age now. My mom is a soprano in the MoTab Choir, I was raised SUPER-Mormon. The conditioning, I find, is still there. I am still programmed in ways I never imagined. I think that the best you can do is get as far away from their thinking as you can, and delve deeply in other ways of thinking so you can see just how skewed and weird their beliefs are in comparison. I never realized how totally wacko crazy the gospel teachings were until I had something to compare them to. But the programming....oy...I still am unconsciously looking for that magical return missionary who will financially support me my whole life. When's that gonna happen? Oh yeah. NEVER.
Hi Everyone - glad to have found this group.
Had my name and the names of my three children removed from the church roles 11 years ago. I credit those "passive-aggressive" primary and youth leaders for helping me to take the plunge. I sympathize with those going through the process! It's life-changing to have your entire family/social enviroment shattered by a you're-dead-to-me sentiment. My husband couldn't hack it...he still has his name on the rolls.
My best advice would be to "hang on"...your healing WILL come, and you'll be stronger than you were before!
Warm regards to everyone out there...I'm please to be numbered among you.
Selina, the ex mormon website I frequent is lifeaftermormonism.net/
I've started writing my exit story, but I don't know how long it will take or how engaging it will be.
