I'm almost surprised that they don't allow abortion for half of pregnancies, after the point at which you can determine the sex of the fetus.
from the comments at "OKLAHOMA: Legislature Approves Bill Ordering Many Businesses To Place Anti-Abortion Signs In Restrooms" (Joe.My.God.)
The new Oklahoma law requires businesses regulated by the Department of Health to post, at their own expense, signs in their restrooms stating, "There are many public and private agencies willing and able to help you carry your child to term and assist you and your child after your child is born, whether you choose to keep your child or to place him or her for adoption. The State of Oklahoma strongly urges you to contact them if you are pregnant."
Schrodinger's douchebag! Good one, Grinning Cat!
From comments at Joe.My.God.:
Originally in reference to tRump's second recent "joke" about assassinating Hillary Clinton, but applicable to a lot of situations!
Many misogynists claim that their outrageous putdowns of women are "just joking"... but jokes in fact serve a social function. People in the in-group, who share the joke-teller's worldview, will find a joke funny (and thinkable at some level); if you find it offensive, you're not in the intended in-group.
More, including Jason Steed's Twitter lecture, at the Vox article http://www.vox.com/2016/8/9/12417100/donald-trump-assassinate-hilla... .
Oh yeah, that fucking district. I don't know how it slipped my mind, but of course that district is the one that includes Texas. Duh.
Yeah, that's the federal district court that forced a Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, since every other district court ruled in favor of gay marriage.
Joseph, if I understand correctly, the lower court ruling UPHELD the law, so a 4-4 decision would have been disastrous. Justice Kennedy was the key factor here, and I can't help but notice that Larry, Curly and Moe wrote some rather "sour-grapes" dissents!Still, this is a VERY BIG DEAL and I for one and glad of it!
I'm going to start volunteering for this sort of thing soon, actually.
Amazing news! All the more reason to help like-minded friends who haven't already done so register, get proper ID if they need it, and VOTE!
Judges for federal district courts and appeals courts are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate as well.
Nice ... and a 5-3, not just a 4-4 upholding of a lower court's ruling. For all of the crap that Kennedy votes for, which you would think would be a blatant violation of the first amendment, at least he's firmly behind reproductive rights.
Of course, since there's never a religious argument made in favor of an anti-choice law — at least not officially — since most (but not all) of the zealots behind the legislation aren't stupid enough to stick something like that onto it, there's no reason for Kennedy to flip.
Hopefully we can get a more consistent replacement for Kennedy, when he goes. Sadly, Roberts and Alito are probably going to be around for a long time. Thomas is a bit older, but I think he's in pretty good shape.
OUTSTANDING NEWS! The Supreme Court of the United States has OVERTURNED the restrictive abortion laws in Texas!!!!!Story from CBS News.
