If any of the rest of you had any opinions on the subject, then why was Oryx the only one talking?  He could have used someone to support him, because he was arguing like an idiot.

I quite agree with the baseline argument, that rape is an under-prosecuted crime, and something should be done about it.  You just don't make that argument with cooked numbers, followed up by blatant misrepresentations of the numbers ... then followed on the end with personal attacks and appeals to blind emotion, like a theist, when you're called on it.

We're supposed to be atheists and skeptics, and we're supposed to be better than that.  That's why I sided with Bruce.  If you'll look at the threads, I backed him up only on his challenges and presentation of statistics, since that's when I agreed with him ... and so should many of you who are capable of analyzing an ally's argument and not just marching in lockstep with them.

And no, TNT, you've got it kind of backwards.  The open forum is for presenting a unified front.  The focused forum is where you squabble out the details.

anti-feminists are like AGW denialists, yes they can fill forums with bogus references and links, anyone can do that. It is one thing to have debates on the very validity of feminism, but that belongs in an open forum, not in the one group which was set aside for feminists. Sandy, I partially agree, we presently have one troll and one troll supporter.

Looks to me like the Troll (I think there's only one) is winning. I bet he's feeling pleased as punch now he's got us all talking about him and arguing amongst ourselves.

Pamela: When people who represent the patriarchal hegemony overwhelm the conversation, telling women how they should be arguing and determining the topics of conversation, then it marginalises women's views in the one place where their opinions should be paramount.

It would be a nice world if the only power people had was that which we gave them. Unfortunately it simply is not the case. Conversations here create the power structures. When men dominate the conversations they dominate the group.

Some men are great allies of feminism. The difference between them and those that seek to control, derail and overwhelm the conversation is that the feminist-ally men are primarily here to listen, not to lecture.

Pamela read the rules and guidelines.

I think men can be feminists.  There is a man in the group that keeps slugging it out with these trolls long after the women have left in disgust.  He is a fine feminist.  There are others.

If you want to see two people agreeing, go look at the tag team that is dumping all this garbage on the group.  They do provide odd moments of humor. One troll said to one of the men defenders of feminism, "If you want to go and create your own feminist group, there's no one here stopping you."  A man telling another man this, well, ROFLOL!

How are these men setting the tone, sidelining you or telling you how to think???  If you don't agree with them tell them off, or simply ignore the offtopic comments and go back to the topic at hand.  The only power they have is that which you give them.
Comment by SecretWombat on February 27, 2011 at 7:38pm
Why even bother having a feminist group then? We can let men set the tone for the conversations, sideline the women, tell the women how they should and shouldn't be arguing and what they should think and simply call it 'the rest of the world'.

As a feminist I for one am welcoming of all women, not just the ones who pass some arbitrary test of what is or isn't 'wimpy'.

Thank you.

Apparently Sehkmet want to "discuss" topics only with people who have the same opinion as she does.  Wow.....how boring.

Person one:  I think THIS.

Person two: I agree!!!

It also sounds like sehkmet thinks only women can be femninists...which I also disagree with.

If someone is so thin-skinned that they can't take the slightest dissent, perhaps discussion forums aren't their cup of tea.  Perhaps a nice safe blog with no room for comments!

I spend far more time on Newsvine because the discussions are more lively and people actually respond in a timely manner.  But I wouldn't suggest sehkmet go there....it is FAR to rough a playground for someone with such "delicate" sensibilities.

One of my feminist qualities is that I can't abide a wimpy women.  Buck up girls...it's a rough world out there.

You don't consider personal attacks (in complete violation of the site's TOS) and long emotional diatribes, in response to rational objections, to be a problem?

I saw the thread on trolling.  Asharu and Oryx were completely out of line for posting that and the thread about derailing.  Asharu was the one who started the antisocial behavior, which is why I took Bruce's side over hers.  I don't care if I agree with someone's base position, when they're as greatly in the wrong as those two were.
