Hi everyone.  I know this is Firefighters & EMS.  I hope my law enforcement wings don't offend.

Maybe we should take this to the 'discussion forum'?  I will answer your questions there.

How long did it take you too tell your department that you were an atheist? Did you enter the department as one? What was the reaction?

Thanks for your service Lt. Harbin! I know the chief and company officers wouldn't think of my less if I came out as an atheist in my department, just because I have proven myself as a good firefighter and an upstanding person. Though many members in our small community would probably react negatively to the idea of having an Atheist and my default "immoral" public servant in their town. Having a group and forum like this is perfect for discussion and venting for firefighter's and EMT's.

I work for a small department in a southern suburb of Atlanta. The city has a population of around 38,000. We have 4 stations and run ambulances as well. I have been a paramedic for 21 years and a firefighter for 18.

I haven't had much friction due to my atheism, even though I am in the heart of the bible belt. Everyone at work knows my beliefs, as I am happy to talk to them about it, if asked. For most, I may be one of the only atheists they know. I think the fact that most of them got to know me as a person before they knew I didn't believe in their god has made it difficult for them to dislike me.

One of our assistant chiefs is also an atheist, so that makes it a bit better. In fact, I have had many of our members come to me in private and admit to having doubts about Christianity or to say they do not believe the nonsense. Most can't come out due to family etc.

I am a Lt., which is a station officer in our department, and since being promoted I really haven't challenged anyone on their religious beliefs since I wouldn't want it to seem like their boss is picking on them! But, I often challenge them on other illogical superstitions and beliefs in the hopes that by applying critical thinking to those claims, will cause them to do the same to their religious beliefs. Time will tell.

It would be nice to have a community of first responders to discuss working relationships and the difficulty of being an atheist in such a heavily Christian career. I mean my department still publicly prays everytime we get together for a meal of banquet. It's tough, but I sit there with my eyes open and my head high, in hopes of catching eyes with like minded coworkers.

Where are you from Wil? How long have you served?

Sounds good to me! I have been in Fire/EMS for almost two years and my department is located in Southern Utah! I haven't "comeout" as an atheist in my department. I would definitely worry about my job if I did. I work in a small town of 400 people (spikes up too 3,000 during the summer) and it is an entirely Christian/Mormon, conservative town!

Not much discussion here, unfortunately. Maybe I'll start. How many years in fire/EMS? What part of the country/world do you serve? Any negativity regarding your nonbelief from members of your department?

Great to see that there is a group of freethinking firefighter/EMT's!
