Had fresh purple asparagus from a friend's garden this weekend. Olive oil, salt, pepper, in a 400 degree oven for about 20 minutes, served with a hollandaise sauce. Yum!
It's rhubarb and asparagus that's coming on for me. I use the same recipe for my rhubarb crisp, Daniel. Yum.
Felaine, be sure and share the recipe for your "sweet & peppery sauce that sneaks up on you...."
Oh, Joan! Thank you! I wish I had the ingredients for a pot of chili, but I don't right now...just fresh veg for a mess if stir fry. Maybe I'll think uo a song about that...
"The Sly Stir Fry" with a sweet & peppery sauce that sneaks up on you....
Daniel, beautiful photos, and my rhubarb is up to about a foot. I will make a batch soon. Can't wait!
Beware of the Sentient Chili

What a clever person! It evokes so many images and makes one smile all the way through.
I wish I knew the melody to "Sentient Chili," but I didn't spend enough time with the serious filksingers since I can't sing a note myself. And I loaned all my songbooks to a guy who had a stroke, moved back to Illinois, and died of diabetic complications almost 30 years ago. (and at the time I was busy trying to keep both my parents alive.)
There's a song about a "Bathtub Full of Lime Jell-O" from the same era...it's sung to the tune of Gilbert & Sullivan's "Tit-Willow." I can't find the lyrics on the net anywhere...
Sentient Chili is amusing. Sinko de Mayo word play is also.
by Chris Weber Beware of the sentient Chili that burbbles away on your stove the peppers are silently plotting with legumes, tomatos and cloves. At night when you're comfortably sleeping and lie unaware in your bed the vegetables plan insurection the lettice are seeking new heads. It may start with slight indigestion from underdone turnip cake crumbs. Frustration in several world leaders whose rice seems to stick to their gums. In kitchens across every nation the tinniest things will go wrong. The plot of the sentient chili strikes Moscow and Rome and Hong Kong. The casserol, spinich and cheesecake lend quite support to the scheme. The nerves of a planet are streached then while tempers start slowly to steam. Still none see the grand machinations now tilting world balance awry- The stage set for final disaster. The chili sits back with a sigh. The one day the conflict is started by generals whose lunches were odd. The mushrooms rejoice as their brothers stalk city to city like god. When dust and all clamor are settled there's not a soul left from the frey. The sentient chili just chuckles and happily simmers away.*******************************
SENTIENT CHILI: Chris Weber wrote "Beware of the Sentient Chili," a popular filksong whose lyrics were published in ASIMOV'S. Since the song was first sung, any pot of chili made for a filksing has been called Sentient Chili. [Occasionally, when two pots are prepared, one hot and one mild, they will be referred to as sentient and non"sentient, respectively.
