Randy, it must be pie time. I tried growing gooseberries, several times. There was some sort of insect that ate the plants  to nothingness.  I gave up.  I forgot to pick and freeze rhubarb this year.  That's unfortunate.  This is a nice rhubarb plant, thick red stems pink inside, with some sweetness.

Last night I made another mince pie.  I didn't know what to do for supper so I got a pie shell I made, out of the freezer, and made a quiche.  It was whatever I had on hand, in this case, broccoli, mushrooms, and onions.  I pre-cook the additives before adding to the mixture, so they will be tender.

I like using the little pie-stampers to make the crust look festive.  My dad used to make pies, and he stamped the crust with the grinder mechanism of a meat grinder, to create a sunburst pattern.  Whenever I have extra crust, I stamp out some pieces and freeze them, to add to the next crust.

So, upon looking for something in my big freezer, I came across some rhubarb and gooseberries. I mixed the two (3 to 1 cup resp.) and made a pie. Tart, but delicious. Half my required "sugar" was stevia.  Now, if I can just find my buried freezer slaw!

Joan, we do have a fenced area.  He loves it.  He also has a black lab friend who stays the night once a week.  They romp and play fight for hours.

It's important to know where our food comes from.  There is more to almond milk than I ever knew.

Daniel, do you have a fenced yard where Rufus can safely go, or do you have to walk him? I imagine he has a lot of energy.

Randy, so glad you are back! 

The main missing elements for human food would be salt, maybe a couple of bouillon cubes, onions, garlic, pepper. 

I read you can't feed onions or garlic to dogs something about their metabolism is affected.  This is a little too thick to be a stew.  I was reading, it should be about 60% protein for dogs.  Also, this misses extra calcium.  I dried shells from a dozen eggs, in the oven, then crushed them in a blender.  One teaspoon is about the shell of one egg.  I added 4 teaspoons of rushed eggshell to the second batch, but the internet recommendations are highly variable.

Also, Rufus heads directly outside after eating this.  His system moves very quickly after eating this home made dog food.

Sounds more like people food! Yum.

I've heard that one cup/day is enough for a small dog. Don't quote me on this.

I've been reading about dog food recalls due to contamination.  So I looked up some home made dog food recipes.  Here is an easy one I made.  It uses a crock pot.

2.5 pounds hamburger

1.5 cups chopped butternut squash

1.5 cups frozen peas

1 can drained kidney beans

1.5 cups brown rice

1.5 cups chopped carrots

4 cups water.

cook 6 hours in crock pot on low setting.

let cool.  Portion into quart freezer zipper bags, 1 cup per bag.  Store in freezer.  Take out of freezer and let thaw in fridge a day ahead.  Can warm in microwave, but check before feeding.

I actually made 1/2 recipe because my crockpot is small.

Rufus loved the stuff!  He gulped down his entire meal.

Im not sure how much to feed.  Also I want some other recipes to vary his diet.  

I may add puree made from cooked chicken bones, blended until smooth.  That way there are no sharp bone shards.
