Foundation Beyond Belief is a charitable foundation created by and for atheists and humanists. The Foundation highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter in such categories as health, poverty, environment, education, human rights, and more.

Members join by signing up for a monthly automatic donation in the amount of their choice, then set up personal profiles to indicate how they would like their contribution distributed among the categories. Maybe you'd like to give 25 percent each to human rights, poverty, education, and the environment. We'll distribute it accordingly. By year's end, you will have helped support a dozen organizations in the areas you care most about.

Only secular organizations are considered for support, with the exception of our Challenge the Gap category, which features progressive, non-secular, non-proselytizing organizations. At the end of each quarter, 100 percent of the donations will be forwarded and a new slate of beneficiaries selected.

Active members can join online discussions centered on the ten categories of giving, advocate for causes, and help us choose the new beneficiaries each quarter. We also host a multi-author blog focused on the cause areas, as well as humanism, philanthropy, and the intersection of the two.

On January 1, 2010, we launched the full site, including the ten featured causes and the means for members to select and change their preferred distributions. As of August 2011, we've raised over $175,000 for 60 charities and have launched Volunteers Beyond Belief, a US-national network of humanist volunteer teams working for the improvement of their communities.

We've begun creating a powerful presence for compassionate humanism in the world of philanthropy. Join us!

The latest interview with Dale McGowan is part of the series "Freethinking Tomorrow: In the Words of Today’s Freethinkers." The interviewer is quite upbeat and the questions will make you want to read RAISING FREETHINKERS again or buy it for friends and family. I know I have. Kind of had to, since I am the quirky interviewer.

Buy a book, help Humanism!

The United Atheist Front is hosting a fundraiser for the Foundation Beyond Belief this June. Buy a copy of Al Stefanelli’s book, “A Voice Of Reason In An Unreasonable World – The Rise Of Atheism On...,” for $1.99 and they’ll donate $1.00 from each sale to FBB!

For more details, check out the United Atheist Front website.

If you watch 60 Minutes, you probably saw that one of our featured charities this quarter, the Central Asia Institute, is currently at the center of controversy. Please visit our blog for more information and out response:

The results for Quarter 1 are in! The takeaway? There are a lot of wonderful, generous humanists out there. Check out how the donation totals fell out:

PS. Members (which obviously everyone here is, right? Right?) - remember that with a whole new slate of beneficiaries, you might want to update your donation percentages.

Looking for a summer internship, or know someone who is? Want to become more involved in secular humanism? The Foundation Beyond Belief will be hiring up to 3 interns this summer to assist with major Foundation operations including membership development, researching and selecting featured charities, donor management, outreach, communications (including blog and social media), program design, and creative organizational development. So if you're motivated and enthusiastic about humanism and the FBB, please apply!

NB: The deadline for applications is April 21st.

Today is special, and you know why? No, not because it is April Fools (side note: I'm very proud of myself for not falling for any of the jokes out there today). Today is a big deal because it is the start of Quarter 2, and we have a whole bunch of new beneficiaries - and some old ones too!

Animal Protection: Straydog
Challenge the Gap: Buddhist Global Relief
Child Welfare: Bright Star Vision
Education: National Center for Science Education - encore!
Environment: Pachamama Alliance
Health: Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP)
Human Rights: Innocence Project of Texas
Peace: Central Asia Institute
Poverty: Water for People - encore!

Have you signed the petition yet in support of Rock Beyond Belief? Our beneficiary MRFF is now preparing to take the battle to court, but Fort Bragg officials need to hear your voices too:
