"It’s the Bible belt, the swathe of religious ultra-conservatives that swings from West Virginia down through Dixie that has by far the highest proportion of divorce rates among the general population."

"Massachusetts, the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, for years has had the lowest number of divorces in the nation. In 2009, there were only 1.8 divorces per 1,000 population. Marriages also are legal in Washington, D.C., which closely trails Massachusetts with 2.1 divorces per 1,000 residents....."

So, NOM, why aren't you out promoting same sex marriage?  The authors speculate that biblebeltonians, being against teenage fornication, have earlier marriages so they can have sexual release without going to hell.  Then they grow apart.  Whereas, fornication-friendly places allow people to sow their wild oats before marriage, so people are more stable when they do settle down.

Another interesting observation that surprised me, "Lesbians are more likely to be in a relationship, but gay male relationships last longer, according to Gates’ research." I did not expect that, it runs counter to the stereotype.  Maybe gay guys sow their wild oats then settle down too?

Very interesting article.  I would think that two factors that are not sited, and probably not studied, would be the number of sexual partners before one settles down, and the number and length of significant relationships had before one settles down.

I have no proof, but I would opine that having higher than normal numbers in these two categories would also lead to longer lasting marriages, whether heterosexual or homosexual.  Maybe test driving many different vehicles before buying would be the way to look at it.

It makes sense to us, but not to the sex hostile xians.

I nominate Dr. Kellie to be on the panel that approves these studies.

Do I hear a second?
