Homosexuality and Masturbation could silence the Church forever!
It's a big responsibility, all, but now that you know the way, we all need to make it happen! You know what to do!
I feel the same way. Watching the clip is bad enough.
But can you imagine what it would be like hearing that kind of shit not only every week in church, but every day from your own parents?
I was not always an ideal kid; I am slightly dyslexic, and when I was in school nobody knew anything about that. I just got bad grades in arithmetic and reading....even though I was addicted to books at an early age. BUT I never doubted that my parents loved me.
At one point I thought my below-average schoolwork was the reason my dad drank...it took me years and years to get over that, but I never thought he didn't love me.
One of my friends was brought up a strict fundamentalist Lutheran; her grandfather was a minister, and her father was the chhurch organist. Their entire family and social life revolved around the church. She had nightmares about Hell till she grew up, read the entire buybull from cover to cover, and came out of that experience an atheist.
"Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived."
The film "Jesus Camp" has been out for years and I still can't bring myself to watch it. I've seen some clips also. I know I'll just be spending an hour and a half getting increasingly pissed off to the point of exasperation. Just knowing what the movie is about puts me in a pissy mood.
The major problem with so-called conversion therapy, besides the fact that it doesn't work, is that it's the same horrible message that is delivered to the already converted every Sunday; "You are all miserable sinners, and unworthy of god's love, but as a favor to you, Jesus died on the cross to atone for your sins anyway. So you'd better do what I tell you to do, or else..."
Control. Control. Control.
What does it do to ANY child to hear that they are worthless day in and day out?
I've seen a film clip from "Jesus Camp," an actual summer camp for kids under 12 (I think). It's frightening. They got a bunch of 8-year-olds in a group and harangued them, yelled at them, for hours about what bad, worthless, sinners they were, and that they were all going to hell. These were kids from fundamentalist families who already believed...
I can't imagine being alone in a room with a toad like Marcus Bachmann telling me I was born wrong, or that I only imagined I was born the way I was/am. (I happen to be str8, but that doesn't matter; what if most of the world was gay, and srt8s were considered "queer," and "needed" therapy? Same thing, IMO.)
That's a great quote by Mark Twain, Sentient. I've never heard that one before.
These xtian butt-heads are so unbelievable. They want the religious freedom to use a scientifically discredited method that causes proven irreparable harm to children because some of the licensed therapists are clergy. Those clergy should have their licenses revoked for malpractice.
Christian group files lawsuit against state of california, over "conversion therapy" ex-gay ban. queerty.com
"Another Christian group, the Florida-based Liberty Counsel, is also planning on filing a suit against the law"*
There has been only one Christian. They caught him and crucified him–early. (Mark Twain)
I really love one-liners and quick comebacks...if you want to buy a book like The Portable Curmudgeon, check out Hlf.com. They have very good used books at iincredibly reasonable prices (plus S & H, of course)
Another good one is The Atheist's Bible. The following is in both books: "Puritanism is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." H.L. Mencken
I've heard that one paraphrased as"...may be having fun."
And today, you could substitute "Fundamentalism" for "Puritanism."
Sk8 - great quotes!
Another paraphrased quote (From robert A. Heinlein's Friday):
"Most human progress has been made by people who got tired of being pushed around,"
PS: One of my favorite books is The Portable Curmudgeon, compiled and edited by Jon Winokur
I've decided that, looking at the course of human history, Homo sapiens should be renamed Homo odium. Modern events are no exception. OK there are exceptions, but I'm feeling curmudgeonly.
