Dallas, now that is one great feel-good commercial. That really makes me smile. So cute.
Sentient, you make a very good point. I was in graduate school 1977-79 and our training included studies such as was shown on this commercial piece with hidden cameras. In this first video, Zimbardo narrates studies done by Milgram looking at obedience.
Stanley Millgram: Obedience to Authority
The second video is a Zimbardo study, also on obedience.
Philip Zimbardo The Stanford Prison Experiment
The third video is Zimbardo raising to a higher level
Philip Zimbardo: The psychology of evil
Sentient, that sums up all the bullshit with a straight face. Unfortunately I can see anti-equality groups using the first minute of that ad!
Joan, thank you for posting that video. It was really quite moving.
It's important not to make assumptions or stereotype anyone. Not just because it's morally wrong. But because stereotypes close minds and prevent us from understanding and thinking, and because it's often factually wrong. So to assume Texans are more prejudiced than, say, New Yorkers, leaves out all of the people who are more open.
I didn't see what town the video was shot in - that might make a difference.
Also, I have mixed feeling about this sort of "gotcha" "candid-camera" journalism, faking situations to see how people react. The same program has done similar episodes on racism. I would feel set up and betrayed I I stepped up to help someone, and found out it was all fake.
Even so, this was moving, and enlightening. Thanks again.
Ummm, Joan? Pardon my French, but HOLY FUCK! That was pretty amazing, and particularly in Texas, where withholding service is legal?
Good morning... on a happier note:
"We Found Our Son in the Subway"
That's terrible news. I'm reading about the murder of that mayoral candidate now. So sad.
