Forum is now open for comments only, due to limited moderation.

The original creator has been absent 8 years.  She may no longer identify as Lesbian or as Atheist, but could still experience discrimination due to being listed as creator of this group.  This group does come up on internet search with this person, and her photo photo, as group creator.  We live in era when discrimination can be expected to increase on many fronts.

I moderated since that time. On several occasions, I requested that another member moderate, but was unable to find a volunteer who would actively moderate content.

Please be aware, posts left active on this group, especially discussion forum, can be hazardous to members, even ones who have been gone for many years.  In most states and countries, there is no protection for LGBT people regarding employment, housing, or employment.  The same is true regarding atheists.  Some members may not even be aware of discrimination, and may not be aware that their old posts and images are still there to come back and haunt them.  Posts and the membership list are visible on internet searches.

There has been at least one case of a member of Atheist Nexus experiencing employment discrimination due to their membership.

Another member of Atheist Nexus was murdered in India, in 2011 (Ajita Kamal).  As far as I can tell, the perpetrator and motive were never found, but Kamal was a known atheist, and known atheists are frequently targeted for brutal killings in South Asia.

Any member who posts, without having their own photo or name on their screen name and avatar, is expressing implied agreement, by default, about the importance of privacy, even on the internet.

A controversial group needs an active moderator, who will look out for the needs and safety of the members, as much as possible in such a forum.

As has recently been done, posts on Atheist Nexus are subject to screenshots.  They are also be subject to internet search.

I recommend that interested members start a new LGBT group, so that there is no issue with long absent group creator and no longer having a moderator.  Until that time, this group is open for a rolling comment wall.  I am not able to expire comments without closing the entire comment page, due to host program (Ning) limitations on moderation.

What do you think of the freedom of parents to shove religion down their childrens' throats? Where does that freedom end and the freedom of the child start?

I went to Catholic school through 8th grade, and by then I'd had more than a lifetime supply. Religious freedom is a good thing, and an important thing. But let's not forget that it means everyone's free to believe whatever bullshit they want. It doesn't mean they get to shove it down other people's throats.

From my early childhood, I was inculcated into a fundamentalist xian church. By the time I was in my teens, I was pretty much in the full rebellion mode and totally eschewed the whole thing by adulthood. These people show their true colors when they're behind legislation to restrict the rights of others based on their own world view. How these misguided fools can claim to espouse love while harshly judging those unlike themselves is more than a paradox. It's a threat to the rest of us.

Those arguments are akin to "I don't care if you're gay. Just don't kiss or hold hands in public or tell me you're gay.  Why do you feel the need to shove it down my throat?"

Bertold, that sounds just like arguments I heard when I was a kid, discouraging interracial male-female couples from marrying and having children because their children would be harassed. (And their children wouldn't have a clear identity and heritage, etc.)

Andrew & GC - one of my favorite arguments coming out of the metastasized-hypocrisy-persecution complex is that gay couples shouldn't be allowed to adopt because their children will be harassed. Never mind that it's precisely these very same assholes doing the harassing.

Ruth has written before about the Persecutor-Victim-Rescuer triangle, a pattern in which people see and define themselves exclusively in terms of those three roles. Notably, if you're a victim (in reality or imagination) long enough, you collect "anger stamps" and "self-pity stamps" which you can cash in for "free" attacks and persecution on your (real or imagined) persecutors, all morally OK because "they deserve it!"

The big lie is that the persecutors claim to be the persecuted. It's an outrage that people are given a pass to discriminate by invoking their cockamamie bullshit religious beliefs. Adding insult to injury is that these entities are supported by our tax dollars. There is a daily assault going on to dismantle the establishment clause.

Too true, Carl. There's this cheery news too:

Alabama signs law allowing adoption agencies to refuse gay couples

There's nothing like making bigotry great again!

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

~ 1 Philippians 4:13

Just another of the lies preached, taught, and promised to frightened, hurt, and depressed people who feel and think they are helpless. Turning to dependency, or external and supernatural powers does not lead to remedies; rather, submitting to such devices creates victims.
