Bertold, during this Grab-em-by-the-pussy administration, I'm not expecting any bold steps forward for LGBT's.  Sadly at this point, we need to fight just to keep the status quo so we don't lose what we've fought so hard to achieve.

True, Carl, it is a victory of sorts, but there's no shortage of other assholes where this one came from.

Anti-LGBT TN Senator Mark Green Withdraws Nomination as Army Secretary, Citing Attack on His Christian Beliefs

Towleroad.com

"Tragically, my life of public service and my Christian beliefs have been mischaracterized and attacked by a few on the other side of the aisle for political gain," Green said in a statement sent to NBC News. "While these false attacks have no bearing on the needs of the Army or my qualifications to serve, I believe it is critical to give the President the ability to move forward with his vision to restore our military to its rightful place in the world."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement earlier this week,

"A man who was the lead sponsor of legislation to make it easier for businesses to discriminate against the LGBTQ community; opposes gay marriage, which is the law of the land; believes being transgender is a 'disease'; supports constricting access to legal contraception; and makes deeply troubling comments about Muslims is the wrong choice to lead America's Army."

This is a nice victory for our community.

Trump’s Executive Order Spared LGBTQ People. Trumpcare Could Kill T...

The House trumpcare's Planned Parenthood defunding hits twice for queer and transgender Americans, many of whom depend on Medicaid and rely on Planned Parenthood for sensitive care or transition services.

The Johnson  Amendment is only as good as its enforcement, and the president* basically told the IRS to not worry about it. Granted, it's never been enforced strongly, with only one church ever losing its tax-exempt status over partisan politicking (the Church at Pierce Creek, Conklin, NY, over newspaper ads telling Christians they could not vote for Bill Clinton).

Carl --

I agree that I don't see anything remotely optimistic for equality in all of this.

Comment by The Flying Atheist on May 4, 2017 at 7:25pm

You're right, Bertold.  The Daily Beast sure has an "interesting take" on the religious liberty executive order.  After reading the article, I'm not totally on board with their line of thinking.

I'm not very optimistic about any positive effect this will have on LGBT rights.  To suggest that the religious right will now need to attack the LGBT community "directly" instead of under the banner of religious freedom is ludicrous.  Am I missing the logic of that argument?  They have been attacking us directly for millennia.

What I am extremely concerned about is not only the nullification of the Johnson Amendment and the further corrosion of the separation of state and church, but the further elevation in status the state is giving religion over all other non-profits.  The Daily Beast doesn't seem too concerned over these details.

The "persecution" Christians are currently complaining about amounts to no more than the progressive loss of privilege Christianity and other religions are facing in the US.  They used to be on the top of the heap.  Now, not so much, and they don't like it.

I'm beginning to think that an ad campaign informing them of their misapprehension needs to happen.
