I am more cynical. i think conservatives most core value is the need to demonize. As long as they can be self rightious bigots, they have a reason to live.

Im amazed and proud of Ireland. Not that Im Irish, but Im still amazed and proud.

Indeed, Cat - fabulous news! (Especially for one of the [formerly] greatest strongholds of Catholicity!)

I'm thinking that the desperation of the fundamentalists over this is based on a worry that when it happens here and the sky doesn't fall, their bullshit is going to be exposed to all as pure unadulterated bullshit.

It's wonderful to read that the citizens of Ireland voted overwhelmingly yesterday to enshrine equal marriage in their constitution! There was perhaps a record-high turnout, boosted by thousands of expatriates arriving by trains, ferries, and planes to vote.

Justaposition.

vs.

"Famed evangelist Franklin Graham is warning that a “storm of persecution” will follow if the Supreme Court decides to legalize gay marriage across all 50 states. Graham implored his 1.4 million Facebook followers on Tuesday to pray for the justices as they prepare to issue a decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, a same-sex marriage case that could have profound implications for the definition of marriage across America. “Pray for our Supreme Court justices as they consider the issue of same sex marriage for our nation — today pray especially for Justice Clarence Thomas who has served on the court for over 23 years,” Graham wrote. “I assure you this affects each and every one of us.” He continued, “There will be a storm of persecution against all people who follow God and His standards if this passes.”

In the Joe Hill song, there's another line after "You'll get pie in the sky when you die."  It's ("That's a LIE!")

Good ones, Ruth! (Especially "You want to teach your kids that the Earth is only 6,000 years old...? ...my kids probably won't hire yours.")

The idea of the afterlife is a powerful part of many religions' immune systems. If When religious teachings and practices go against people living full, thriving, productive, fulfilled lives, "this life is only a preparation." "By and by, you'll get pie in the sky when you die."

I hope Ireland shows the world how much it had grown and changed.

It reminded me a little of a couple who I knew decades ago. He was Italian American Catholic from
Chicago. She was Irish Anerican Catholic from Chicago. I remember them telling me their parents did not approve of their mixed marriage, so they went to Las Vegas to get married.

The USA is going through "The Crazy Years,"  With Pat Robertson playing the role of Nehemiah Scudder and the Neo Puritans disguising themselves as the Tea Party.

"If this Goes On...."
