Some "faith leaders" are starting to "take ownership" of their homophoibnia.  via thinkprogress.

I'm not meaning to use scare quotes, but the words are not necessarily words that I would use.

"Catholic Bishop of St. Petersburg, Florida Robert Lynch:

Sadly it is religion, including our own, which targets, mostly verbally, and also often breeds contempt for gays, lesbians and transgender people.

“…Sadly it is religion, including our own, which targets, mostly verbally, and also often breeds contempt for gays, lesbians and transgender people,” he wrote. “Attacks today on LGBT men and women often plant the seed of contempt, then hatred, which can ultimately lead to violence. Those women and men who were mowed down early yesterday morning were all made in the image and likeness of God. We teach that. We should believe that. We must stand for that … Singling out people for victimization because of their religion, their sexual orientation, their nationality must be offensive to God’s ears. It has to stop also.”

I usually think about videos, "Maybe I'll watch it later."

Glad I watched Staceyann Chin's powerful speech now!

Here is a moving and stirring speech given by New York poet Staceyann Chin at the LGBT Center On Halsted in Chicago.  It's well worth a listen.  A transcript can be found in this article:  DNAinfo Chicago.

Yeah.

A rough analogy, as much as anything can be a suitable analogy: I don't like rap music. I even question whether it should be called "music". I simply don't listen to it.

If I were spending years of my life crusading against it, condemning listeners and artists to hellfire, protesting at concerts, trying to get it banned from the radio, from YouTube, from iTunes, that would suggest some deeper problem!

GC that is a lot of people's suspicion about Omar Mateen as well.

Someone on NPR the other day was saying that the evidence is mixed as to whether many rabid homophobes are fighting their own homosexual feelings. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if Pastor Manning is actually attracted to men (and is desperately denying it to try to get right with his god).

Manning is an infamous wacko preacher who lost his church due to financial issues. he's the guy who claimed Starbucks adds gay semen to Lattes.

Using his proclamations for anything other than ridicule, is wasted effort.

"Sodomy is more dangerous to America than radical Islam."

What The Actual Fuck?  Dangerous like interracial marriage is, or the right to divorce or equality for women in the workplace?  Why do I get the distinct feeling that this guy is hung up on anal intercourse?

Carl, I agree with your frustration.
This, along with 1000 other reasons, is why we need to elect the Democrat presidential candidate, the Democrat senator and Congressional repressentative candidates, and democrats for local and governor offices. Republicans want to pack the SUpreme court and roll back current progress, re-legalize prior discrimination, create new discrimination, and engage in dangerous, sometimes lethal, scapegoating.

I wish the corporate media would do a better job of highlighting tea-party abuses, and really show comparisons of how states do under liberal vs. conservative legislatures and governments. Which degree of progress and prosperity, health and freedom, do most AMericans want - Albania? Or Massachusetts? Mississippi? Or Washington State?
