Carl, I agree with your frustration.
This, along with 1000 other reasons, is why we need to elect the Democrat presidential candidate, the Democrat senator and Congressional repressentative candidates, and democrats for local and governor offices. Republicans want to pack the SUpreme court and roll back current progress, re-legalize prior discrimination, create new discrimination, and engage in dangerous, sometimes lethal, scapegoating.

I wish the corporate media would do a better job of highlighting tea-party abuses, and really show comparisons of how states do under liberal vs. conservative legislatures and governments. Which degree of progress and prosperity, health and freedom, do most AMericans want - Albania? Or Massachusetts? Mississippi? Or Washington State?

I'm a pretty upbeat and optimistic person but sometimes I just want to give up on the future of humanity. Overly religious extremists may be a fringe part of our society by the numbers, but they sure are running the show by holding a disproportionate amount of government positions. I guess what annoys me most is that anyone in the same political party who may seemingly have moderate views votes for these measures as to not buck the party label.  Pathetic.

And at the federal level as well.  Case in point...

Lawmakers vote down LGBT rights measure

"Shouts of "Shame, shame, shame," erupted in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday as Republican lawmakers narrowly defeated legislation to protect the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees of government contractors."

Good statement revisions, Joan and Grinning Cat.  You two, and the rest of you here, are the best of humanity.!

Grinning Cat, I love it!

Bertold and Joan, those Texas Republicans would surely love this version:

"Christianity is a chosen lifestyle that is contrary to the fundamental truths that have been revealed in nature, recognized by our nation's founders, and shared by many rational people. Christianity must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include couples united in Christian ceremonies. We oppose the granting of special tax exemptions or legal entitlements or creation of special status for Christian behavior, regardless of state of origin. We oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose Christianity out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values."

Only in election years do we have such nonsense floating in the air. Not.

Bertold, try this version on for an alternative:

Homosexuality is a fact of evolution that is in line with other evolutionary developments of flora and fauna. Homosexuality must be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle in public policy, and family is to be redefined to include people who love each other. We support the granting of special legal entitlements for loving behavior, regardless of the state of origin. We support protection for any criminal or civil acts against homosexuality out of knowledge, science, and trust in humanist values.

Pandering to the crazies always pays off.

Comment by Daniel W on Friday

There's a major storm of homophic panic across the land!  It' must be an election year.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on Friday

Brought to you as an official plank in the adopted platform of those fun-loving Texas Repuglicans:

  • "Homosexuality is a chosen behavior that is contrary to the fundamental unchanging truths that has been ordained by God in the Bible, recognized by our nation's founders, and shared by the majority of Texans. Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples. We oppose the granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin. We oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values."

I agree, Daniel. Let those people who believe faith is the way to make decisions and laws have no place in a rational society. They don't seem to know how to negotiate or compromise.
