Exceptionally good question, Donald. I wish I had an answer for you, and if I did, I'd bet that religion figured into it somehow!
When I was in Japan in 1956, the public restrooms were for both sexes. When I was in Germany in the '60s & '70s, the restroom attendants could be either men or women in either restroom. Then, in 1978 in Munich, I attended a confrerence, and the hotel had saunas. The women's sauna said "closed, use the men's sauna". I went in, and there were naked men and women sitting around and enjoying the steam together. We were in Helsinki, and my wife was in the women's sauna, and a guy walked in looking for his wife. No one paid any attention to him. What the hell is it about America?
A cartoon seen in the Philadelphia Gay News "explaining" North Carolina's nasty new law that supersedes Charlotte's and other localities' nondiscrimination ordinances, makes it a crime for trans people to use the appropriate public restroom, and forbids local minimum-wage laws:

Now THAT is a CLASSIC, Bertold!
Thanks for the info on all gender restrooms, Grinning Cat.
Nah! The motherf*&^@r only had one dad - himself.
I thought Jesus had 3 dads and a mom - Jehovah, Holy Ghost (Casper?), and Joseph and Mary.

Translation: Jesus had two dads too.
