Louisiana's chief asshole governor, Bobby Jindahl, spent $371,548.63 of his state's taxpayer dollars to fight marriage equality, while cutting education and other benefits in his state.  Jindahl is a pathetic piece of crocodahl dung.  Not that I would use an ad hominem.

This video was embedded on Hemant Mehta's website.

Kind of a treat. I guess we could look at candles as emblematic of the fires of hell.

It's always much easier to find a lover than a true friend, but if a lover isn't at least one of your best friends, what's the point?

From BBC,40 great quotations about marriage.

Note, those are all about heterosexual marriage. Many are about how the sexes have different temperaments, expectations, comforts, excitements, opportunities, etc.  However, there is one I particularly found meaningful:

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages”

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900)

I have known for decades that conservatives of all types need something, or somebody, to hate. It's part of their nature.

I remember watching the Berlin Wall being destroyed and wondering (knowing it was not the end) who was going to be the next target of the religious wrong..(Even though the xians had nothing to do with the collapse of the USSR.  That was a foregone conclusion when the old Bolsheviks started dying off.)

If non-undergodders are the next target, I think we'll be in deep doo-doo because the Islamic fanatics will probably join them.... while fighting each other at the same time.

I sincerely hope I'll be dead by then.

Bill Nye on homosexuality and evolution.

What a lame answer. It's nice that he was supportive, but apparently he hasn't read anything on the topic since Desmond Morris' "The Naked Ape" in the 60s. There is so much more information. It's well known that in nature, same sex attraction is common for many species. Has Nye heard of something called "Google"?  He could have read this BBC article, or many others.

Much as I like that Nye is a spokesperson for science and rationality, this response was lame.  Too bad for that.

No question we will continue to experience discrimination for the rest of our lives.  In addition to the overt discrimination, which we often see and read about, many people will continue to discriminate covertly, and lie while doing it.

One thing I will not do is let the assholes get me down.  I've lived through too much, worked too hard, seen too much.  This is our one life, and I will live it the best I can.

VERY good point, Carl, one I've made myself elsewhere.  Equal rights means IN ALL VENUES, including employment and in patronizing services and businesses, and this is very likely to be one more fight toward completely securing those rights.

I don't think the GOP and the religious "right" is finished quite yet with demonizing the LGBTQI community.  Yes, we have finally been given equality when it comes to marriage, but there is still a lot of legally sanctioned discrimination still on the books in many states.  We have a lot of opposition ahead of us.

Daniel, as it comes to the GOP looking for "another group to demonize," ultimately I still think they may settle on US - atheists.  The problem with such a decision is similar to that with the Mexicans: we're growing in numbers while they're shrinking.

I think this behavior and its history need to be pointed out publicly.  Not only is scapegoating minorities a reflection of their insecurity and an insult to the egalitarian policies which represent the US at its best, it just plain doesn't work in the long run.  If they want to lean on small government and lean spending, traditional Republican planks, I'm fine with that, though I'll still oppose it where it goes too far, but their religiously driven social policies went beyond the pale 10 squares back.

It's time for the GOP to grow up and drop their belief in Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and Yahweh.
