Second Major American Christian Denomination Embraces Marriage Equality
@Bertold, what can you expect of people who want to apply 3,000 year old writings to anything in the Space Age. They needed babies for canon fodder and the largest tribe would win the wars, fought with spears, knives, clubs, &c. (I suspect Mr. Kalashnikov came along much later.)
A great response on Disqus to SCOTUS declining to hear a marriage equality case:
Leviticus, not the Constitution, is the law of the land. With gay people getting married, any day now God is going to rain down fire and brimstone on us all, and the United States will sink into the bowels of the earth, never to be heard of again. That's exactly what's happened to every other country where gay marriage is legal, right? Canada, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and all the rest---gone!
Protect Portland Children just sent out a list of 31 elementary schools that are targeted by the Good News Club for their after school child conversion programs. They're asking for parent volunteers to help monitor the activities of the club.
Great Bit! It was hilarious.
Staunch atheist comedian Jamie Kilstein demolishes common anti-gay arguments, touching on parenting, "natural" and "unnatural", and religion, in a three-minute rant:
Video and transcript; NSFW and NSFFFTH (Not Safe For Family and Friends of Ted Haggard)
"Why do you have, like, nine f***ing kids yet you say that gay folk can't adopt because it might screw the child up... just because your man bits fit into some girl bits doesn't mean you have to have kids.
Do you know how many straight parents shouldn't have children? Go to a movie theater or an IHOP on a Sunday...."
"...I've read the Bible. And there is a lot of unnatural $#!t that happens in that book!..."
@ TFA - I wonder which is worse, having fags or having women in your mosque, or if both are equally repugnant.
Probably fags are worse. At least women can make more Muslims.
To some extent I will "take what I can get" as far as acceptance of human beings as who their are, in the religions. Any moderation is better than nothing at all. Islam supports the murder of gays and unsubmissive women. And in the 'privacy' of their churches and homes, so do evangelicals - they just don't run any countries where they can make that happen.
If Islam could be diluted to the extent that christianity is today, that seem good. The problem is - this from a nonmuslim, nonscholar- christianity has at least the bipolar message of Jesus, who can be a source of love as well as hate. Islam has only the unipolar message of the prophet, who does not have a message of mercy, as far as I know. So within Islam, I don't know if there is possibility of reform, only dilution via Westernism.
I wonder which is worse, having fags or having women in your mosque, or if both are equally repugnant.
I'm always torn about how to react when religious people do something "progressive." On one hand I'm glad they are changing toward the better. On the other hand, I'm dismissive of their slow-to-change progress on what really should be non-issues in a modern society.
Re: the "converted" evangelical - he's talking in a christian context that's complete nonsense, but his change of view is still notable.
controversy over a proposed "Women and gay friendly mosque" in South Africa.
"Mr Hargey says the Open Mosque, that has been in development for two years, is designed to counter growing Islamic radicalism in Africa
