This may sound unrealistic to many, but I have been involved in political campaigns before and I know some things about getting the attention of politicians.
1. Watch the videos by Sean Faircloth. He is a great strategist for atheism.
2. Read Rules for Radicals, a book politicians hate because it is responsible for some effective politicking.
3. Read Pedagogy of the Oppressed, by Paulo Freire. He was good at rallying the people.
4. Form coalition of like-minded people, i.e. gays, and lobby your congresspeople. Sean confirms my experience, politicians pay attention to people who talk to them. Form a group, develop an action plan, and go talk to the candidates. Ask them specific questions of interest to you. Tell them what your position is. Have talking points ahead of time so you can demonstrate the need for action.
Personally, I found I could have an effect when I called up candidates in my district and made appointments to see them privately. Sometimes they listen. Sometimes they don't. At least you can watch what they say and do publicly and how they vote to know if they heard you. It is better to know your enemy. Politicians are wonderful manipulators.
Who was the president who was known as agreeing with everybody and then voted from his own understanding?
OH! sk8eycat ! What an awful thing to do .. to the son, no wonder he was angry, ... and to his wife. I hope she didn't allow that to happen to her more than one. If he would drop her once, he has a capacity to do it again.
You have seen some rough relationships in your time. Building healthy relationships is the best revenge for yourself! In fact, it is the only revenge that makes sense to me.
The mean-spirited, corrupt, supremacists of any stripe, self-righteous, opinionated men and women of the world pass on their lethal poison to those around them and to children. They infect everyone they touch. Hate, covering up fear, exists as part of their disease.
That is why people, such as those of us who have different values and principles, need to stand up and speak out. I didn't stand up about my atheism because I was afraid of what my family, friends, neighbors and community would think of me. I just had one too many, "I'll pray for you!" or any of what I call the:
Passive Gospel, yield, pray, obey, turn the other cheek, love him to the lord, crucify yourself daily in imitation of the crucified christ and rejoice in your crucifixion."
I asked myself in 1974, "I have done all that I understand to do and where has it gotten me?"
"So, given that reality, what should I do now?"
I thought about my natural gifts that I had nothing to do with creating. I could see, hear, smell, taste and speak, feel with my heart and my gut, and I have a brain to think.
Therefore, why was I created? What is my purpose in life? Where do I find the answers?
If I have my senses, then I am created to use them. My purpose in life is to develop them to their full potential. I find my answers within me.
The rest was easy. Well, kind of.
I asked myself: "Do I have what it takes to raise my children into mentally healthy, mature adults? Do I know how to earn a living to support my needs? Do I have the capacity to learn all that I need to know?"
"YES! I DO!"
And so do we all. Some of us have to remain silent to preserve income and family relationships. I support those who have to choose that option. There are others of us who have no reason to remain silent, other than fear of those who "love" to hate.
If fear holds us back from speaking truth to disease, maybe if we stand up they will crumble like the cowards they are. If they are bullies, maybe they are full of hot air and will burst. How will we know if we never try?
How many battered children were "accidental conceptions," ie: unwanted?
I once knew a guy whose mother told him often that he was an "accident" and had ruined her showbiz career. He grew up to be a wife beater. His wife was also his adagio partner, and if he got mad at her he'd drop her out of an overhead lift, and then say he tripped on something on the ice.
Years ago I was giving a lecture at the U of WA in Seattle about family violence to the doctoral students. I reported on the situation of emergency room events with small babies having unexplainable broken bones and bruising. The term "battered child syndrome had just been coined.
I went to a lecture after mine and a doctor revealed the appearance of newborns with similar characteristics and it seemed to be correlated with abnormalities in newborns and their mother's history of alcohol abuse. At that time, they had no term for fetal alcohol syndrome.
Now, we know about battered wife and child syndrome and fetal alcohol syndromes. It is strange how syndromes don't become recognized until after there is a label for the patterns seen commonly in emergency rooms and birthing rooms.
She looks so stupid that she would not/could not recognize "gay" if it was in bed with her.
I have used this quote before, but I believe it's true: "Anger/rage is fear in disguise." WHAT did these two dimwits have to be afraid of?
For that matter what do DOMA supporters and TP members have to be afraid of? I'll never understand certain types of people.
Jessica Dutro sentenced for the murder of her 4 year old son who she thought acted gay.
dailymail.com although also on lots of sites.
It looks like this young woman is mentally ill or on drugs. She assaulted all 3 of her children, but seems to have given the worst to Zacchary.
Neither the mom nor her boyfriend look like they are playing with a full deck. I was trying to decide if they have the appearance of people born with fetal alcohol syndrome, especially the boyfriend. Maybe my imagination.
Regardless, I don't think she should ever be allowed to have, or be near, children again.
David Pakman interviews one of the most evil influences on society today. I don't know why I torture myself with this stuff....
Thinking more about what tangible thing can be done to help African LGBT people.
I think most congresspeople will either ignore a letter (conservatives) or might be inspired to shine light on the topic (Liberals). So maybe writing letters, or inspiring others to do so, to liberal politicians. Such as those in my state, WA.
Here is y search on the White House petition website. I don't see anything on Africa related to LGBT people. Also, there is only one topic on LGBT people, which relates to ENDA. There is no mention of this in immigration topics.
So I think there is no White House petition regarding the plight of LGBT people in either SubSaharan Africa or Muslim countries.
I think it would be good to start a White House petition. Some of the petitions are by crack pots, and some are serious. I will ponder this a bit. Any thoughts or comments?
