Patricia,

Arizona has long endeavored to be "The Alabama of the Southwest". I don't know why. Well, yes I do. Arizona is one of the major "White flight" states, as reactionary white people left California and other states in reaction to the presence of more people of color.

I know a fair number of "snowbirds" - retirees who migrate to Arizona in the winter, and back to the Northwest in the summer. Some of them, you can't even chit chat with, without their bigotry coming to the front. "How was the winter there this year?" "The sunshine was great. But too many Mexicans."

I didn't to research on statistic there. I don't feel like becoming worked up and upset. My impression is, recent anti-immigrant (more accurately, "Anti-Mexican", since they won't pull people over for looking Canadian) laws have resulted in people of Mexican heritage leaving the state. Alabama, too. When I am in a better mood I might check on that. Might not.

More on Virginia.  It makes me want to cry.

I never thought in my lifetime there would be so much change.  Never imagined.  Being gay, I never expected acceptance, equality.  The purveyors of misery would not allow it!

I shake my head and think, wake me up!  It's too much!

You cant go through life without knowing there is a pendulum.  For every yin, a yang.  I don't believe in metaphysical forces that call for balance - our success does not create misery in Africa, Arab nations, Russia.  But I keep thinking, the next election cycle....  what will happen?

Ultimately it will go to the Supreme Court again.  I hope Ginsberg is taking her vitamins.

Just amazed.  Amazed.

It has been my experience and observation that it takes generations for any kind of prejudice to die out; it's passed down in families, churches, and even public schools. It was over 100 years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation before the Civil Rights legislation was passed, and even that didn't change people's attitudes.

Look at the way the Boy Scouts still discriminates against LGBT and atheist children; how does that affect the youngsters who are members today?  (I have no idea how many African-American Boy Scouts there are now, but I suspect it's a small percentage... smaller than the percent of African Americans in the entire population, I suppose.)

Hell, look how long it took for women to be allowed to vote in the USA, and what some of the suffragettes had to go through to get lawmakers to realize they were serious.  And how many decades after that before women were (somewhat) accepted in the workplace doing the same jobs as men.  I think it took the absence of skilled men during WW2 to turn things around, and when the men came home they wanted women off the assembly lines, out of the offices, and back in the kitchen.  Many women refused to go.

But the ERA was never passed, women are still making less than men who do the same work, and women are still not promoted as often as men are to managerial positions.

The sad fact is that it's the mindless beer-drinking, FAUX Noose-watching couch potatoes who make the difference, and there are way too many of them.  May they all die childless.

I have seen this sort of ignorance in Africa, The Middle and Far East and to a lesser extent in Europe.  Here in the States we should not get too comfortable, a lot of the Police here are just as bad especially with the Ts. If you are a member of the LGBT community you have probably experienced it first hand. The US Government gives a lot of lip service but when it comes down to real action of-times they look the other way.

Unfortunately, I believe it will take generations for this kind of hate to subside in Russia, especially since it's government endorsed.  The LGBTQI community there has a long, rough road ahead of them.  I can't imagine living in that type of environment.
