Daniel, the photo made me laugh and share with family and friends.

Don, your surprise party sounds like a splendid event, one you will hold in your memory. Your last piece of pie tops it off nicely.

Having family and friends around me gives me more pleasure than I can express.

Kathy, I would love it if this group could join Don with his pie and coffee and a tour of his garden. Thankfully, he shares photos of the seasons.

That's hilarious, Daniel. Perfect parody of a trophy pic; love the cat instead of the hunting dog!

You know what a Yankee is?  As folklore has it, in the US, a Yankee is someone who lives north of the Mason-Dixon line. North of the line, a Yankee is someone who lives in New England. In New England, a Yankee is someone who lives in Vermont. In Vermont, a Yankee is someone who eats pie for breakfast.

...For breakfast slice of pie and coffee with cream. Sounds yummy....I ought to try that tomorrow morning.

Hah!  It's been a few years since we made our own ice cream.  We did have some Ben & Jerry's on hand, though the pie eaters around here tend to be purists.  And as Vermonters, oftenwe have pie for breakfast.  With milk or coffee.

WHAT! .. no homemade vanilla ice cream topping !?

That, indeed, is a grave sin.

Don, belated happy birthday. I've been out of touch the past few days. A spectacular pie.
Our berries bear early in the summer. The middle of June usually. So they are long gone but still cheap at the grocery store but not local

Thanks, everyone, for the birthday wishes.  A big one (70!) it was, and my wife had planned (for weeks) a wonderful surprise gathering, a catered feast attended by so many old friends.  I was so gratified and humbled.  I really did think that my own pie after a quiet dinner out was going to be the extent of our celebration--which would have been just fine, of course.  So we never did get to the pie until yesterday.

The last slice:

Don, it sounds like you had a happy birthday.  Nice that your birthday happens at the best time of the year.
