Kathy, thanks for for the happy birthday.
Randall, I stopped killing them for the same reason, but this morning I killed one nest.
I had to use my large ladder to harvest my pears and there was a nest of them on it.
I figured I might get stung moving it around and climbing up & down, so I sprayed them with Pine Sol while they were all on the nest and not active in the cool of the morning.
I used to kill paper wasps. But after I read about their value(s), I quit. For one thing, they keep my tomato horn worm population down. So far this season, I haven't seen any.
Since they're getting "mealy", I'm allowing my green beans to mature. This winter, I'll pop out the dried bean seeds.
Hi Spud, happy late birthday. As long as I've been dealing with wasp nest this is the first time I've known the majority of the ones we have are paper wasp.
Kathy, thank you for the advice. I will look for some bottles and do that. The traps cost aboout $14 each, and so far I've filled up 5 of them with yellow jackets, with still zillions of them. Also yesterday, for variety I guess, I got into my pickup and was immediately stung by paper wasps, who had built a nest in the space between the door and the frame. So Randy, that's both of us! Spud, I still have beekeeping gear - if I can find it all, I might still put it all on and spray the nest they have build behind an outdoor light over the garage. I have to remove the light to get in there, and they are still flying in and out, day and night.
Loam, you can fill plastic soda bottles or milk jugs with anything sweet inside the mouth of the bug. Fill it about three quarters full of soapy water first. Leave them on the ground. Yellow jackets go in and can't get out. There are a lot of simple ones like this on the internet. Probably better explanations for them. But all simple and free.
Daniel, the 11 second video is marvelous! I've seen other different animals play together on TV. "Why can't we all just get along?" (Rodney King)
I've been stung twice by paper wasps this year, but it was my own fault. Tried to pick some raspberries too close to their nest.
Just ran off a rabbit munching on my sweet potato plants. They love them and green bean plants. Wascoly wabbits.
Those yellow jackets sound bad. If I had them, I'd try finding and spraying the nest in the cool of the morning before they become active. Even then, I would wear protective clothing and headgear. I read they will attack in mass at anytime of the day or night if something gets close to their nest.
Every year, I have paper wasps that build small paper brooding chambers under my eaves, under the steps of my ladders, and other places like those. They worry me when they fly around me, but I've never been stung. They're not aggressive.
Glad I don't have yellow jackets.
Oh you make my mouth water for fresh picked cukes.....
Yellow jackets drive us in; they are mean and will not tolerate a hand on a water faucet.
A wonderful story about Rufus and the cow.
These cucumbers have many blossoms but unfortunately, there were not enough pollinators to fertilize all the blossoms. Thank you for the instruction on how to do the pollinating job! Those that mature are huge and they are delicious. Nice and juicy, not a sweet taste and definitely not bitter. I ate a whole one tonight for dinner. I forgot to take photos of them today and will do so tomorrow. It was 110°F in the greenhouse today. I have fans going. The beans were a total flop as were the corn, and zucchini.
I can claim victory for the potatoes and cucumbers. Oh, and the tomatoes are huge; still not ripe.
