Using Bone Ashes in the Garden. 12.9.18
Oh, yes. Pine Sol kills them almost instantly. I don't like killing them, but didn't want to get stung. In the past, I've used several kinds of detergent, and all of them worked well.
Picked a couple of bushels of pears. Gave some to my neighbor that likes them and have started eating mine that I picked a week and a half ago.
I find Roma's easy to process because they're not too juicy. However, they lack the flavor of most others. Enjoy the results of your labors, Daniel!
They are beautiful!
I put duct tape over the siding defect that yellow jackets are using for their superhighway to somewhere inside the garage wall. We'll see if that stops them. There must be thousands in there.
Spud, did the pine sol work? How are the pears?
This is the sauce tomato harvest so far. I spent half a day cooking them down. Veryhappy with the sauce. I freeze it in freezer zip lock bags, one cup per bag. In previous years, I grew heirloom romas and Marzettas. A lot were lost to blossom end rot. This year, most were the variety Ranger. Really productive, meaty, and no blossom end rot at all. I also grew one type called Big Mama. Huge cooking tomato, but I dont know if pounds per plant were as high as Ranger.
Usually there are 2 or 3 harvests from the sauce tomatoes. This bodes well for an excellent supply of tomato sauce in the freezer for this winter for pizzas and pasta. They are also excellent for salsa.
Kathy, thanks for for the happy birthday.
Randall, I stopped killing them for the same reason, but this morning I killed one nest.
I had to use my large ladder to harvest my pears and there was a nest of them on it.
I figured I might get stung moving it around and climbing up & down, so I sprayed them with Pine Sol while they were all on the nest and not active in the cool of the morning.
I used to kill paper wasps. But after I read about their value(s), I quit. For one thing, they keep my tomato horn worm population down. So far this season, I haven't seen any.
Since they're getting "mealy", I'm allowing my green beans to mature. This winter, I'll pop out the dried bean seeds.
Hi Spud, happy late birthday. As long as I've been dealing with wasp nest this is the first time I've known the majority of the ones we have are paper wasp.
Kathy, thank you for the advice. I will look for some bottles and do that. The traps cost aboout $14 each, and so far I've filled up 5 of them with yellow jackets, with still zillions of them. Also yesterday, for variety I guess, I got into my pickup and was immediately stung by paper wasps, who had built a nest in the space between the door and the frame. So Randy, that's both of us! Spud, I still have beekeeping gear - if I can find it all, I might still put it all on and spray the nest they have build behind an outdoor light over the garage. I have to remove the light to get in there, and they are still flying in and out, day and night.
Loam, you can fill plastic soda bottles or milk jugs with anything sweet inside the mouth of the bug. Fill it about three quarters full of soapy water first. Leave them on the ground. Yellow jackets go in and can't get out. There are a lot of simple ones like this on the internet. Probably better explanations for them. But all simple and free.
Daniel, the 11 second video is marvelous! I've seen other different animals play together on TV. "Why can't we all just get along?" (Rodney King)
I've been stung twice by paper wasps this year, but it was my own fault. Tried to pick some raspberries too close to their nest.
Just ran off a rabbit munching on my sweet potato plants. They love them and green bean plants. Wascoly wabbits.
