anyone have favorite weather apps or sites? I want an app but have not found one that shows monthly forecasts. I don’t want accuweather because the ceo is tight with the you-know-who admin, and is getting special monopoly deals for govt paid data. I have found websites but would like an app.

Randy, sorry your trees didn’t do well. I plant more than make it to maturity, too. I hope some of yours did make it.
I have tons of aphids on the collards and Brussels sprouts. I think there will still be some to harvest. I just need to get out there and do it tomorrow.

Hope your back improves soon, Daniel. Fortunately, I haven't had back problems in a long time. I think it's due to all the walking I do.
Of the trees I've recently planted, almost half don't look like they'll make it. Three of them--a pear, peach, and pecan--have all but died. My only hope is sprouts at the base, probably "suckers" that won't produce fruit.
In the garden, my kale and collards have been taken over by hungry caterpillars. I keep picking them off, but to no avail. Grrrr. At least my chard stays worm free.
Spud, I'm no expert. These are the first chestnuts I've ever grown. Last year I bought a few, and wasn't crazy about them either. What I"m hoping is that I learn why others like them, historically and around the world. From what I read, they are starchy and don't keep well at all. Store bought are often way past their peak, not stored correctly, and often shipped from China. When I see their growing popularity around here, I think there must be something to that, more than novelty. So I am giving them a try. From what I read, chestnuts need to be cured 2 to 4 days off the tree, then roasted. If they are eaten the same day, or after 4 days, they do not have flavor. They can be stored frozen or refrigerated, but not allowed to dry out, and not allowed to get moldy. We'll see.
Randy, they do look a lot like buckeyes. The leaves are very different. From what I read, buckeyes are toxic. So I will stick with these. Thanks for the info on your persimmons. I will check fruits again today - now it's apples, persimmons, pawpaws, and figs. Tree leaves are changing color and falling.
Yesterday I rushed to get 2 more rows of garlic planted. The ground was wet and heavy. I had to clear that garden area and turn it over, first. Going into it, I had an achy back. Now it's much more painful. Bad judgement on my part. Dammit.
Daniel, your chestnuts look exactly like buckeyes. I think I mentioned that we planted some chestnut trees on the farm. Can't recall ever eating one.
Can't recall, either, how long it took before my persimmon trees produced fruit. Nate took some to market, but they didn't sell. I won't force them on him anymore.
I've only ate chestnuts one time. I bought some from the store and tried them raw. Didn't taste good. Roasted them. Didn't taste good. Put them in the compost pile.
Randy, how long did it take for your persimmon trees to start bearing?
I enjoy starting trees from seeds. I’ve grown plums, peaches, maples, ginkgos from seeds. All of the fig trees were from cuttings. Also some of the plums.
Today are the first ever chestnuts. I bought the tree mail order less than 2 years ago. This tree had 2 female flowers among the many makes. I pollinated it with pollen from the tree I planted nearby. We will roast and eat them ina couple of days.
