Bill Maher is an atheist [whoa, shock and amazement!]. He is also a dedicated opponent of Donald Trump and anyone who would support the man or his goals ... and that includes ol' Yahweh, himself! As it turns out, there is a substantial correlation between autocratic leaders, such as Stalin, Hitler, Mao, AND the Orange Nightmare and the "capriciously malevolent bully" who supposedly created them and everyone else, a relationship which Maher has uncovered and elucidated on with his latest edition of New Rules.
So please watch. The following isn't much by way of news, but don't be surprised if you find yourself nodding in agreement more than a little. Bill, if you please...
I've watched a lot of Bill Maher videos. This is one of the best.
His critiques of "godless" autocrats, and of the Ten Commandments, are right on.
"But here's the thing about Naziism, Maoism, and Stalinism. Those were religions. State religions. These dictators didn't get rid of God because they hated religion, they got rid of God because they hated competition. Same with North Korea today: they claim to be godless Communists, but their calendar begins on the day their founder Kim Il-Sung came to earth from heaven."
"Look at the Ten Commandments, it's very Trumpian. The first four are all about him.... Here we have the Ten Commandments, the ten worst things you could possibly do, and left off the list are torture, rape, child abuse, incest, and slavery. But four spots on the list go to variations of 'stroke my ego' and 'kiss my ass'. There's only two people I can think of who would do that: God and Donald Trump."
Any cult of personality, at least in the last 100 years, might as well be a religion.
Thanks for those quotes, GC. Now I won't have to take dictation from the video.
"They were religions." This is something I've been saying for years, particularly in Stalin's case. Stalin stomped on the Russian Orthodox Church because they were indeed competition, but then he also co-opted them where he could. He had propaganda films produced which made him out to be perhaps one step down from a god (and maybe omit the "one step down!"). In the modern day, the Kims of North Korea are no different, except perhaps that they didn't have an established church to compete against.
And make no mistake: Trump wants to walk that very same road.
Love Bill Maher!
