Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

The Most Hated Woman in America (The Thinking Atheist)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Gary S on Thursday. 7 Replies

Before Aron Ra and Matt Dillahunty, before Dawkins or Dennett or Harris or even Hitchens, there was Madalyn Murray O'Hair.  In the midst of an America where Christianity was being flaunted as a defense against the godless communists of the Soviet…Continue

attacking ideas (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat Apr 4. 1 Reply

Attacking ideas is a considerable portion of what we as atheists do.  Why attack ideas?  Ideas earn attack when they don't serve people, not just us but those who adopt said ideas, mistakenly thinking that they have value when they don't.  Our…Continue

bending truth, or "We Can All Be Manipulated" (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat Apr 4. 40 Replies

The following is one of TheraminTrees' most thorough-going pieces, wherein he looks at the process and techniques whereby a "religious" organization (which will sound VERY familiar to most of us, once introductions are made!) takes a person who…Continue

The Playboy Interview: Richard Dawkins

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Loren Miller Mar 28. 16 Replies

I suppose it was the news that Playboy magazine was returning nudes to its pages after a year's hiatus that sufficiently perked my curiosity to check them out again.  I hadn't looked at Playboy since perhaps 2008, when I began to recognize that I…Continue

Same for me, Ruth and Carl. Some people often called me a pessimist, but now they understand that I'm a realist. And I try hard to keep that knowledge of a deteriorating world from overflowing and spoiling other parts of my life - no need to disturb a happy cat, a demented aunt and more.

Ruth, you're not alone in your dismal outlook.  There's so much wrong in this world that one can't help but wonder if we are de-evolving and intellectually regressing.  Nationalism with fascist tendencies is on the rise in many countries, the continual Middle East problems, turmoil in Venezuela, North Korean shenanigans, civil wars and unstable countries in Africa, corruption and strong arming in Russia, democratic turmoil in the United States, the constant unwarranted and thoughtless meddling by the U.S. in regions all over the world, China's military buildup in the South China Sea, global wealth inequality, global environmental threats, massive economic uncertainty across the globe, astonishing and despicable human rights abuses rampant in countries rich and poor, a nuclear war constantly looming over us, etc., etc.

There's no doubt our global society is in a fragile and uncertain state.  I admit too, that I've lost sleep over the plethora of problems globally and locally.  I sometimes wonder if this kind of uneasy feeling is what people of the world experienced in the years leading up to and through World War II when it seemed as if all of civilized society was in fear of breaking down.

The Matt Mountain and New Yorker pictures gave me a good laugh.

I wish it were so easy for me to let go of my anger over the politics of human destruction, Idaho Spud. Humanity's descent into final madness, having begun with denial of truth itself and science, keeps me up too often. The collective embrace of hate and lies will not end well.

Carl, it's years since I've seen The Crucilbe and would love to see it again. Yes, astroturf would be very appropriate.

I attended the local version of 'March for Science' at the weekend. The leader of Aarhus university spoke, saying that 'it was absurd that this should be necessary but in a world of 'alternative facts' is was.

That latest image pissed me off, but I've learned to not stay in that state for long.  A guy could go crazy angry at "him" constantly if he let himself.

Comment by The Flying Atheist 19 hours ago

OK, my last post about "him."  (I don't want to soil this fine forum. It's hard to be continually pissed off and not vent.)

Spud, yes, orange grass would be apropos.  I also thought astro-turf would be just as appropriate since it's fake, just like Trump.

Carl, when I first layed eyes on that carrier, my brain perked-up because of all the greenery which I love.  I thought wow!  I'd like to own something like that.  O course, I'd get rid of the golf course (I assume that's what it is), most of the lawn, and plant fruit & nut trees, along with a huge garden.

But almost immediatly I saw the joke and that put a damper on my enthusiasm.

One question:  Shouldn't that grass be colored orange?
