Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

New Rule: Win or Go Home (Real Time with Bill Maher)

In case you hadn't noticed, we have a mid-term election coming up in three days, and it's more than a little important.  With it we can take back at least one if not both houses of Congress from the Republicans and send a message to Donald Trump…Continue

Never let it be said that Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, is anything less than up to date with the state of the art as it comes to the modern household.  However, as a discriminating conservative Christian, Betty would never tolerate…Continue

New Rule: Church and Destroy (Real Time with Bill Maher - HBO)

Bill Maher is an atheist [whoa, shock and amazement!].  He is also a dedicated opponent of Donald Trump and anyone who would support the man or his goals ... and that includes ol' Yahweh, himself!  As it turns out, there is a substantial correlation…Continue

concealing abuse (TheraminTrees)

We think of institutionalized child abuse and for many of us, the natural reaction is to think of the Catholic Church. Certainly, their guilt is beyond question, even as the headlines of the Boston Globe early in 2002 and the more recent news…Continue

Liberal Redneck - Climate Change the Game (Trae Crowder)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Ruth Anthony-Gardner Sep 20. 2 Replies

Trae Crowder isn't just about atheism.  He has a deep and abiding concern about what's going on with this planet's climate and the all-too-probable catastrophe we face from a fundamental change in weather patterns.  That said, Trae is thinking about…Continue

Megan...Go to EvolveFish for all kinds of satirical variations of the xian stick-on fish.

About religion & public schools, IMO Comparative Religions should be taught everywhere, and I don't mean just the big-name ones.  High schoolers, at least, should be made to scrutinize the similarities of all the sun-godmen who were born of virgins, had 12 disciples (the signs of the zodiac), died and were reborn (the winter solstice and the vernal equinox)....and so on. Christianity is just another form of plagiarism.  Except they got the "golden rule" bass-ackward.  The older religions all stated it as : Do NOT do unto others that which you would NOT want them to do to you.  Makes more sense that way.

Haha I love all the cat pics!

I think I'll just put up a "Beware of Atheist" sign on my door, or maybe just Skeptic.. Atheist might get my house egged. But that should stop any BS sharers :p

Debra,

"If students want to become religious, spiritual or non-religious when they are older than that is fine.  Manipulating a child into believing what you believe against their own wishes is wrong.  Teach a child how to think, not what to think."

I totally agree with that statement.

Felaine, thanks for the links to the tracts.  I should order some and pass them out on my way to work to the leaches who stand at the train station passing out "The Watchtower" magazine and their tracts.

Regarding the Orange County story, it makes my blood boil every time I hear stories about religious groups wanting to pass out bibles at schools.  These religious people are as disgusting and pervasive as a roach infestation.  At least the FFRF is countering the attack with our own literature.

Still.....I can't believe that the school district censored some of our material.  How to fix the problem:  keep the schools as an environment for learning (not religious recruiting) and the whole problem is solved.

Why do we have to keep fighting these battles and putting out these continuous fires?  It's like a christian version of Whack-A-Mole.  I just want to pull my hair out.

Carl, you can get packets of "non-tracts" to hand out to the doorbell-ringers from  https://ffrf.org/shop/nontracts  They are $4 per dozen, or a sample pack of one each for the same price, and you don't have to be a member.

One of  my faves is "Cookie-Cutter Christs," a collection of short descriptions of earlier god-myths that are almost identical to the stories in the gospels.

And this is an interesting news item that I just received:

https://ffrf.org/news/news-releases/item/17625-atheist-literature-t...

I hope they open up some minds and/or encourage kids who are closeted non-believers to hang onto their disbelief in the buybull belt.

Grinning Cat, a long time ago, when I first went online, I got in touch with a sweet couple who owned a catnip plantation (Catnip Cafe) on the Fraser River, just outside of Vancouver, B.C.  In addition to selling baggies of catnip for cats, they carried a  line of catnip teas for humans, and catnip-laced chocolates.  Verrrrry tasty!  But, a couple of years after I "met" them, they sold the business, and moved into town to raise children.

*sigh* I really wanted to take the train to Seattle, and then transfer to Vancouver, and meet them...one set of parents owned a cozy-looking B&B in the area, too.

It didn't take me long to realize that one of my self-satisfying labels to the no religion sign would be taken by the religious as an excuse to ring the bell, because they obviously were not crazy, deluded or preaching BS.

Comment by Idaho Spud on April 30, 2013 at 3:52pm

I saved your NOthump sign Flying A.  I may put one on my door.

I've even been considering labeling it with "NO thumping", or "NO Wakaloons", or "NO crazy people", or "NO fairy stories", or NO reality challenged proselytizers".  But you mentioned bullshit, so I'm thinking a good label would be "NO BS" or "NO BULLSHIT".

Comment by The Flying Atheist on April 30, 2013 at 2:51pm

I know damn well that I don't have to listen to door-to-door proselytizers or take any of their literature.  I totally resent that fact that they are intruding into my personal time and space with their insane bullshit while I'm eating, napping, doing chores, watching a movie, or just chilling around the house in any degree of dress or undress.  And I very sternly tell them so.  The only times I say anything more is if there are any young adults with them......high school or college age.  I'll address them and tell them not to believe the lies they're being told, to think for themselves and to use the internet to look at videos on TheThinkingAtheist.com.  And I'll say, "Remember that!  The Thinking Atheist dot com!"

I thought this touched a nerve.

Well, I didn't want it to come to this, but the above sign is going to be placed on my front door today.  Three days in a row, this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I was interrupted in my home by a knocking at the door and visited by religious solicitors.  Friday was the Jehovah Witnesses and Saturday and Sunday were ladies from a Spanish bible church.  Ugh!!!  So obnoxious.
