Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

The Burial Waltz

Hi everyone,It was almost a half-century ago, at age 15 or so, that I encountered one of the more important influences in my life: a crazy group of poets/musicians who called themselves The Fugs. They had a huge impact on me in that, though raised in…Continue

Some William Blake to Ponder

Hello all,I'm new here, and so hope this isn't old hat. But, I just had to point you toward a marvelous poem by William Blake in case you've never read it. Despite his sometimes heavily tinged biblical references in his other art and poetry, this…Continue

Doubtless most if not all of you have heard about that sorry piece of cinema known as God's Not Dead, and perhaps its sequel, cleverly entitled: God's Not Dead 2 (wow, how original!).  Personally, I have wasted neither time nor money on either,…Continue

There's no getting around it, Atheist Pig is fast becoming my fave secular comic, and as evidence, I refer you to the following.  Jesus and Mo had better watch their respective asses, 'cuz they got a porker coming up on the outside, and I'm pretty…Continue

Steph, I like the cat surfboard escape!  Where did that come from?

I'll also say Ugh to prayers, and restaurant prayers were embarrassing even when I was a believer!

Tony, I like the pipes also, but can do without the shoving.  The best part, of course, is the legs of the red-head. :)

Flying A, I agree with you and others about eliminating "friends" who are annoying and add nothing positive to my life.

I am so glad you liked the GIF Melinda. I thought it was so cute.

Life is short and you should fill it with people who bring good things to it.

I agree Flying Atheist - that is a good decision.

I also hate those holiday prayers - yuck.

Tony, that was fun :-D

Melinda, time well spent indeed. Always good to be here.

I don't get bothered by religious types in my daily life, especially after I stopped going to AA meetings. I did have a little discussion with a colleague recently who was a non-specific theist. She thought that the fact that scientists discovered things rather than inventing them was proof of a creator/designer. I was just a touch speechless and didn't pursue the point.

A fine day to you all.

Melinda, I second that!

... just smart for getting the most out of the short time we all have on this wonderous planet! I definitely feel that time spent here on Hang with Friends is time well spent!!!

Ugh, prayers. I'm an AmVets life member and was once the post treasurer. There were no opening or closing prayers then. When they started I stopped going to meetings. A few days ago I remarked to a post officer that members forget to go to church on Sunday and do their praying at post meetings. He chuckled.

About 15 years ago the newly-elected president of a residents council where I live appointed me to a post and I badgered him about the opening invocation. I told him I was a pagan and insisted on an occasional pagan invocation. The Xian members did the job for me. For three months a few people complained about the invocation at the previous month's meeting. Their complaints irritated the president so much that he asked the board to replace the invocation with a moment of silence. The board agreed and the invocation went away, never to return.

Don't know if anybody likes the pipes, but I do. Found this one particularly entertaining, and wanted to share with you all.

Ugh!!  I hate sitting through a prayer in a restaurant.  Been there, done that several times.  It's embarrassing.

Melinda/Felaine, about 10 or 11 years ago I made the conscious decision to cut myself off from and rid my life of people who had nothing positive to bring into my life or that I didn't enjoy being around.  I was tired of not getting anything good in return for the effort I put out.  Perhaps to some people that sounds selfish, but my life has been so much better and less stressful as a result.  I just hate drama, unless it's in a movie.  Although I'm a nice, friendly and cordial guy (if I may say so), I'm careful and choosy about who I bring into my inner circle.  You two have done the right thing.
