Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Am I so old and not know the definition of aphrodisiac, and its historical definition being based on Aphrodite, that her name came from the African drugs that Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used for sexual enhancement? Dhu!  Aphrodite, ancient Greek…Continue

Degrees of Doubt: The Claims and Credentials of Ravi Zacharias (The Thinking Atheist)

Anyone here ever run onto an apologist by the name of Ravi Zacharias?  I've seen his name dropped multiple times on YouTube as supposedly being THE ONE APOLOGIST that no atheist wants to cross swords with, because of his facility with christian…Continue

attacking ideas (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat Apr 4. 1 Reply

Attacking ideas is a considerable portion of what we as atheists do.  Why attack ideas?  Ideas earn attack when they don't serve people, not just us but those who adopt said ideas, mistakenly thinking that they have value when they don't.  Our…Continue

Happy Fathers Day Randy Loren and everyone else.

Did someone or some group of people plan these events?

Joan, there's some evidence that fossil fuel money is behind the Republican party's change toward science denial and fossil fuel/oligarchy embrace. Of course there are always lots of other factors that likely were unplanned.

To all you Dads out there,  Happy Fathers Day!

I have 4 children (3 girls, 1 boy, ages 34-44) and 6 grandchildren (no wife). To my knowledge, nothing special is planned to celebrate "my day". That's okay. In two weeks all four kids (and theirs) will be "back home in Indiana". We'll celebrate then!

Colonization of Africa, Asia, and S. America resulted in unspeakable atrocities committed by European and US powers. The heart-wrenching stories often tell of such awful ways of domination, and it is hard for me to realize that my ancestors committed some of those crimes against humanity.

I understand that attitudes of superiority allowed crimes against others, even in this century, i.e. crimes against blacks, Native Americans, and now with the way we treat immigrants. We hold no one accountable and we become part of the offense. If people with moral and ethical bearings stood up, then such insanity would be addressed.

Being an active participant in the Civil Rights struggle 50 years ago, I thought our efforts would result in better conditions for all races and classes in today's world. The situation is much worse now than it was in the 1960s. The differences are that all those years ago minorities and women struggled to have the rights of access to opportunities for a better life. Today's challenges are that men and women, people of all races and nationalities, as well as believers in superhuman powers and those who lack such beliefs fall farther behind the standards of living of those many years ago. The middle class grows smaller as those living at or below the poverty rate increases. Wealth abandons those who work for a living even as money increases for those who have unearned income.

How did this happen? How did the working class get shoved out of access to opportunities for growth in wealth? Did a few take away the rights of working people or did working people give away their rights?

Was our nation rendered weak because of globalization, or did the instrument of our status occur because of the machinations of Russia?

I know exactly when the decline of the middle class began; it was in the late 1970s when labor started to lose power. The belief systems represented by the Republican Party began to tear down the access to opportunities for the poor and working class, and the beginning of the destruction of the safety net.

We now have to face the challenges presented not only by a dysfunctional Executive but by a dysfunction of the Legislative and Judicial Branches of government. These problems did not start with Trump; they began those long years ago dismantling of representative government.

How did this happen? Did someone or some group of people plan these events? When did we fail to provide the kinds of education needed for a participatory government?

Chris, before oil it was gold that forced people from their homes. Before that the railroad. Before that... you know the history.
So doesn't it all boil down to greed?? When something is deemed valuable men go out of their way to aquire as much of the product as they can. Killing an entire ethnic section of the population to achieve their goals doesn't seem to be a consideration.
Is that tribalism or just greed? Can the two ever be separate?
Comment by Ian Mason on June 13, 2017 at 9:30pm

Agreed, Chris. The Arabs can get away with murder (literally) because of the oil. Russia is heading the same way because of natural gas. The contortions our politicians go through to justify all of this would be comic if the state of the world were not so serious.

Comment by Chris on June 13, 2017 at 7:29pm

Daniel W.

Resources seem to be more devicive than tribalism.

If Oil didn't drive the world economy would there be less war?

Looking at the KSA ( Kingdome of Saudia Arabia), or Russia makes me think the West is addicted to Oil.

Technology/science  ie. Wind Power, Solar Power, Wave power and other power generating techniques should ween the world off Oil and prevent climate change.
