Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

10 Tricks from 46 (Betty Bowers)

Apparently, Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, has been slumming.  That is to say, she's been talking to Mike Pence [gasp!].  It would seem as though Mike has offered some of his not-so-personal tricks of the trade on how to be a 21st century…Continue

Speak English? YOU FIRST! (Betty Bowers)

Honestly, the title to this piece is badly under-representative of the content.  To be far more accurate, what we have here is Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, going on a rant.  Before you say it ... Say WHAAAA?  Betty Bowers ranting? …Continue

10 Things About Patriotism (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Plinius Sep 26, 2017. 2 Replies

It seems as though lately, Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, is evolving into America's Best Patriot.  She has recently been taking some fairly well-aimed shots at a certain Orange Nightmare and his sycophantic hangers-on, regarding the…Continue

Kathy, I'm glad you got to see the eclipse!

I drove the nine miles and saw the eclipse in totality for one minute. I saw the diamond ring effect but no Bailey's Beads. The sky was clear and the humidity had dropped it was 93° but not bad at all.
@ Ian, religion is an everyday all day long affair in the South. There is always someone willing to thank god and ask where you go to church (not if). In the waiting room at Vanderbilt University while my husband was having treatment I was sitting with a large group because there was no place else to sit. A man came to our group (surgery waiting) and asked if we had a minute to hear how the Lord had saved his wife, just three weeks prior, at that very hospital. Me and my godless heathen t-shirt just got up and walked away :)

The photo doesn't do it justice.

I tried to write a post here but it wouldn't upload. Joan seems to have recieved it somehow.

Ian,

That is a cool photo of your eclipse.

Here we only experience a tint darkness. Though, the shadows from the tall trees seemed to cast from the wrong direction.

Had a pleasant experience yesterday in Capitol Hill park. A woman was struggling with putting a yellow ribbon round a tree so I gave a hand. Her name was Kimberly and she told me that 'the love of her life' was coming home from a tour of duty as an eco-warrior. We had a nice chat about the way of the world and its future. She talked about 'meditating and praying' for a better world but I didn't discuss the issue as her nearest and dearest were out and about doing real things.

Ian, I'm happy you had a gap in the clouds after coming all this way to see it. Lots of other things to enjoy, especially friendly people.

Comment by Ian Mason on August 21, 2017 at 3:16pm

There was a little gap in the clouds here in Nashville, just enough that I can say 'I saw it'.

Comment by Ruth Anthony-Gardner on August 21, 2017 at 2:15pm

All we got to see was dimness here, too much cloud cover.

Daniel, I'm nowhere near the totality zone, but my butterscotch tabby, Garfield decided he wanted my lap and for a considerable time ... and he NEVER does that!  Can't say that I minded him at all, but then, he's a nice kitty!

I've been watching eclipse coverage on The Science Channel, and they've laid out a number of projects in process:

  • A number of amateur astronomers in the eclipse path, all calibrating their telescopes in the same way to record observations in the eclipse totality.
  • Two specially equipped WB-57 aircraft chasing the moon's shadow across the US at 50,000 feet, making specialized observations which are not possible any other time.
  • A number of weather balloons with cameras and other instrumentation being released to do studies of "Bailey's Beads" and other effects from 100,000 feet!

The excitement about the eclipse is palpable, and what is REALLY encouraging is the total LACK OF WOO TALK in evidence ... at least so far!
