Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Speak English? YOU FIRST! (Betty Bowers)

Honestly, the title to this piece is badly under-representative of the content.  To be far more accurate, what we have here is Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, going on a rant.  Before you say it ... Say WHAAAA?  Betty Bowers ranting? …Continue

10 Things About Patriotism (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Plinius Sep 26. 2 Replies

It seems as though lately, Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, is evolving into America's Best Patriot.  She has recently been taking some fairly well-aimed shots at a certain Orange Nightmare and his sycophantic hangers-on, regarding the…Continue

A Prayer for Our Nation (Betty Bowers)

I'm going to keep this one short and sweet.  Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, has seen what is going on with the current occupant of the Oval Office, and my impression is that she is not at all happy with it.  True to her citizenship,…Continue

Any Babymetal fans here besides me? I have to ask because 1) I really like Babymetal and 2) Babymetal unknowingly played a role in my journey out of religion. For those who are unfamiliar with Babymetal, here is a link to one of their most popular…Continue

Bertold, is that related to proposals I'd heard about of a few states looking to replace highway taxes added to gasoline -- which penalize dirtier, less-efficient cars -- with taxing drivers or car owners directly, or even having a tracking device in your car to track your actual mileage if you don't want to pay the maximum tax?

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on Friday

Ian, that tax on cars thing sounds like such typical bullshit. Here they want to put an extra tax on electrics and hybrids to "create parity" with people using gas engines. Life under a kakistocracy!

Comment by Ian Mason on Friday

Chris (NL) Denmark is just about the same. If care and welfare can be cut, it is. If tax rates for the rich can be cut, they are. Those of us on unemployment or social security now have to work part-time or be penalized. We can't get the part-time work but the government doesn't care about that. I've got just over a year until I can take early retirement and get out of the damn system. Meanwhile, purchase tax on cars is being reduced on a sliding scale: the more expensive the car, the greater the reduction. Bugger all for small, efficient run-abouts.

Joan, I post videos using dimensions 360 x 203.  Works perfectly.  :)

Comment by Joan Denoo on Friday

I used 560 x 315 for the width and height and it is still too big.

Dr. Anthony B. Pinn describes how religion enabled slavery and suffering by making a virtue of suffering. He challenges that belief and offers other alternatives. I remember, all too well, when I was told that by being a battered wife I lived in "imitation of the crucified Christ and of all women, I was most blessed."

~ Dr. Richard C. Halverson, my Presbyterian minister at First Presbyterian church in Washington, D.C.,

He also said, "To endure the cross is not tragedy; it is the suffering which is the fruit of an exclusive allegiance to Jesus Christ.

~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I remember, also, the professor/priests at Gonzaga University where I studied for my doctorate: "God had one son on earth without sin, but never one without suffering."

~ Saint Augustine

I must add for the newcomers that I wrote my doctoral dissertation, "The Splendid Heresy" in which I documented how the church maintained and perpetuated family violence and how battered women can escape. Obviously, I did not get approval for my research and denied a Ph.D.

Same old, Ian, same old. Eight months of building a coalition didn't change a thing. Parliament is still criticizing the plans. The PM said that EVERYONE was going to profit from the new plans, but when I read better I see that the gap between poor and rich is widening rapidly. They have their tricks to make it look good but they go on as usual, coddling the big companies and ignoring people who need special care. I'm livid that people with cystic fibrosis no longer get free medicine, to mention one thing. And the care for elderly people is closing down, just now that the big bulk of babyboomers are getting their pension. The environment comes last...

How's Denmark?

Comment by Patricia on Friday

I heard from another online friend that Chris's whole city was evacuated, so hopefully he's not one of the ongoing count of deaths.

Hope to hear/see some great stuff from your China trip, Randy. Enjoy!

I really hope Chris decided to leave. The news said the fires were beyond the fighters abilities to contain them......terrifying!

I know from our experience this past summer.....get out, & get out fast!

Comment by Ian Mason on Thursday

Enjoy yourself. Randall. Good thermal underwear might be called for in the colder regions.

The US is not alone in that, Carl. For example, I've just read that only about a dozen families that survived the Grenfell tower block fire in London have been rehoused. Those at the lower end of the social pyramid are treated as 'surplus to requirements.'

Chris (NL), how's the new government, now that there is one?
