Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Bible Belt Atheist (New York Times)

Started by Loren Miller on Thursday. 0 Replies

The following showed up in my YouTube feed this morning, and I decided to have a look.  Turns out, the New York Times has given us a reasonably even-handed look at a good friend of ours, being one Jerry DeWitt, former bible-thumper and now a pretty…Continue

How would you respond?

So, this morning, I was at my local coffee shop as I am most weekdays between bus runs. I do the editing on my husband's books so I had my laptop with me. My wallpaper is a picture I found online sometime back of a double helix with the word atheist…Continue

The Fake Christian Busybody Show (Andrew Bradley)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Plinius Apr 9. 1 Reply

It seems as though there was a Gay Pride parade in some town somewhere and a Christian commentator, herein known as The Activist Mommy, apparently got her panties so in a bunch about it that she had to fire up her video camera and record a…Continue

Now that Sinclair Broadcasting has stated their position regarding fake news and its threat to our democracy, Mister Deity's Brian Dalton has decided to throw his $0.02 worth in as well ... though I don't quite think his presentation was really what…Continue

Oh, NO!  The gun debate has gotten so heated that it has Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, TALKING TO HERSELF!  Apparently, one of her has had a stroke or a serious breakdown in cognitive skills, as she does little more than parrot the NRA's…Continue

how dogma pollutes discourse (qualiasoup & theramintrees)

Started by Loren Miller Apr 3. 0 Replies

"The Lord is our God; the Lord is One." "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father, but by Me." "There is no god but Allah, and Mohamed is his prophet." Assertions, taught as fact, but without any form of corroborative…Continue

I was thinking of him, I hope all is well.

The most recent message from Carl that I can find is January 19, 2018 at 2:14am.

Ian sent him a message and so did I. I see no response from Carl.

It's a cultural thing. Being British I have no problem with stones. I've lived in Denmark for 30 years so kilos are fine but when I see a U S tv program that uses pounds, I have to mentally convert.

Good thing we're not using units like stones (for people's weights in the US), or furlongs per fortnight!

"1.8026×1012 furlongs/fortnight -- it's not just a good idea, it's the law!"

A gross is a dozen-dozen ... 144.

Comment by Idaho Spud on April 12, 2018 at 2:52pm

I still see "dozen" used quite often here, but no "score" or "gross".

I don't know what a "gross" is, but still know what a "score" is because I memorized Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address in school and still remember most of it.  It starts with "Four score and seven years ago...."

Comment by Ian Mason on April 12, 2018 at 1:20am

Joan, it seems the old measures and words are being lost - dozen, score, gross. I had them drummed into me at school along with 12 pence = 1 shilling, 20 shillings = 1 pound.

Comment by Joan Denoo on April 11, 2018 at 2:34pm

Ian, you wrote, "Someone is daft or doesn't know that a score is 20."

I am daft, and I don't know what 20 scores.

I forget who it was, but found it interesting when one (Democratic) senator asked Z. "Would you be comfortable telling us which hotel you're staying in? Would you be comfortable giving us the names, dates and times of everyone you texted last week?"

Comment by Ian Mason on April 11, 2018 at 7:32am

I also read a quote about 'scores of people who use Facebook'. Someone is daft or doesn't know that a score is 20.
