Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Okay, gang ... when is the last time you saw Seth Andrews do an animated video on his YouTube channel?  Seems like donkey's years ago, don't it?  Well, apparently Jeff Sessions and his "religious liberty task force" got Seth's nelly up enough that…Continue

worshipping narcissists (qualiasoup & theramintrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Ruth Anthony-Gardner Aug 4. 2 Replies

They're all around us: people who perceive the world as revolving around them and will go to considerable lengths to make it so: narcissists.  Such beings have been with humanity, I suspect, since humanity emerged from the gene pool.  Even worse,…Continue

If you spend any time around YouTube and have any history of looking at atheist material (or even theist material!), you will inevitably run into: "XX Questions Atheists Can't Answer."  These are occasionally followed by: "XX Questions Atheists…Continue

appropriating morality (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Joan Denoo May 1. 7 Replies

We've all heard the claim: "Human morality comes from god."  And we've all seen for ourselves what Yahweh's "morality" looks like, from condemnations of homosexuality and the treatment of women as chattel to inexplicable sanctions against the eating…Continue

The following showed up in my YouTube feed this morning, and I decided to have a look.  Turns out, the New York Times has given us a reasonably even-handed look at a good friend of ours, being one Jerry DeWitt, former bible-thumper and now a pretty…Continue

That would be a great thing, that filter.

Comment by Joan Denoo on April 15, 2018 at 12:45am

I would like to have a filter that would identify those who are dishonest, unreliable, undependable, assaultive, sexist, or racist. Too many times I have been in a position in which I felt threatened or invaded sexually. I can't see it coming and get caught, by a closed door or by a piece of furnature.

I had a school friend who could send out signals to men at a bar where we relaxed after class and the next time I saw her she would tell me of the wild time she had with one of the men.

I don't want that kind of attention and believew I don't send out welcome signals to men who want to fuck. I don't think I invite such treatment and I think the aggression is in the men who initiate the action.

Now, I am an old woman and have no desire for sexual activity. When will I be too old for men to stop acting like sophomoric college men?

I feel for the young women who want to have control of their bodies. My college friend wanted the attention, and men read her inviting signals. I wish men and women would be able to have or not have such encounters.

What a shit he turned out to be. I wonder if some sort of screening process is possible in organisations that could prevent people like this gaining top (or any) positions? Some way of weeding them out from membership?

I thought it was directly from the american atheist site.

I don't know very much about him, but it doesn't say much about what he was supposed to have done or is accused of.

Apparently, Buzzfeed is the source of the dirt on Silverman, the same as they were regarding Krauss.  I for myself am not wild for that coincidence, especially considering that the tone of the writing on the report concerning Krauss was (to my mind, anyway) clearly slanted against the atheist movement.  While I'm not discounting Buzzfeed's reporting, I would STILL like to hear some reportage from a more neutral source.

"American Atheists will continue our mission

* to advocate for the absolute separation of religion from government,

*to elevate the profile of atheism in public discourse, and

*to build and strengthen communities that fully represent the growing number of atheists in America."

There is no indication that I an find that spell out the reason for Silverman's firing. I hope, with a sincere heart, that he did not commit a sexist or racist offense. Too many of my heroes have feet of clay!

Comment by Loren Miller on April 14, 2018 at 5:35pm

I've gotten a couple emails about that, Patricia, and if Silverman is gone, that's a considerable loss, no matter how you measure it.
