Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Never let it be said that Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, is anything less than up to date with the state of the art as it comes to the modern household.  However, as a discriminating conservative Christian, Betty would never tolerate…Continue

New Rule: Church and Destroy (Real Time with Bill Maher - HBO)

Bill Maher is an atheist [whoa, shock and amazement!].  He is also a dedicated opponent of Donald Trump and anyone who would support the man or his goals ... and that includes ol' Yahweh, himself!  As it turns out, there is a substantial correlation…Continue

concealing abuse (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Ruth Anthony-Gardner Sep 23. 3 Replies

We think of institutionalized child abuse and for many of us, the natural reaction is to think of the Catholic Church. Certainly, their guilt is beyond question, even as the headlines of the Boston Globe early in 2002 and the more recent news…Continue

Liberal Redneck - Climate Change the Game (Trae Crowder)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Ruth Anthony-Gardner Sep 20. 2 Replies

Trae Crowder isn't just about atheism.  He has a deep and abiding concern about what's going on with this planet's climate and the all-too-probable catastrophe we face from a fundamental change in weather patterns.  That said, Trae is thinking about…Continue

Men who challenge men to stop violence

Many men join in the effort to reduce violence against women and children and other men. He speaks of the need to place responsibility on men instead of focusing on women to stop violence. He offers a breath of fresh air, as do so many of the men on…Continue

I'm still recovering from two October birthday parties held for two children (ages 45 and 40) and two grandchildren (5 and 9). The chaos brought enhanced meaning to the word cacophonous! Still, it was all wonderful.

Going to the county court house today to pay property taxes and vote early (straight Democratic). I might "celebrate" by buying a dozen doughnuts--day old. Probably not.

Nature has a way of revealing who/what has the enormous power. We, humans, think we have all the answers, that the sea will yield humankind food forever, that the soils will produce crops for of billions of generations, the air will take our soot, smoke, gases into air filling our lungs and bodies with toxic chemicals, yet the Earth continue to provide  our needs. We mine the minerals creating mountains of pilings, we poison our river with deadly chemicals, and leave slashed forests, we plug the water with silt, debris, and chemicals without any sense of responsibility.

Take from the bounty of the Earth and its resources, make feeble attempts to heal the wounds, and refuse to replenish the soils, expecting to be able to steal all that exists claiming the Earth as ours to own as we plunder and squander.

Nature responds, ice shields melt, oceans warm, sea levels rise, ocean-chemistry changes, life as we know it dies.

Prevailing winds change, storms increase in frequency and strength; tectonic plates shift because of loss of the weight of ice sheets, volcanic actions respond to the changing plates, gases gush from belching eruptions. Droughts kill forests, insects invade dying and dead trees, fires burn,  the sky fills with dense layers of smoke. Fossil fuels burn out of control. Life ends, and we wonder why?

Our generation lived at the peak of the fossil age and that age collapses, not because it is inevitable but because we fail to value our precious Earth and properly care for her.

We fail to develop solar, wind, and wave power. We ignore alternative ways of living that make it possible for life to flourish.  Greed, overexploitation of natural processes, and hubris cause this disaster and our choices lead to the death of living things. The Earth will remain. It will produce the chemistry that begins the evolution of life. Future sentient beings will rise out of the mud and create a new Earth.

Sorry to hear that, Randall.  Seems that "Michael" had no consideration for anything ... but since when COULD nature consider?

Comment by Patricia on October 11, 2018 at 2:32pm

That's grim, Randy.

Yes, anyone who can pay the big money for their medical procedures do, & the rest of us have to wait for the list to get to our turn.

From what I've heard and seen, Mexico Beach, Florida has been wiped out by Hurricane Michael. I care because that's where I vacation for two weeks every winter. It is (was) a beautiful little beach town, perhaps 1000 residents.

I already reserved a rental for February, 2019, but it looks like that's not going to happen. I'll have to wait to hear if the house is still standing. Doubtful, as it's 2 blocks from the gulf. Very sad.

They always find their way into a private clinic without waiting list.

Comment by Patricia on October 10, 2018 at 2:57pm

You can bet if the politicians were in this kind of agony, they wouldn't be on any waiting lists!

Comment by Ian Mason on October 10, 2018 at 2:55pm

It's the same in Denmark, Patricia. The government has employed more doctors but has paid for that by sacking nurses and other staff in order to balance the budget. The net result of the 'improvements' has been 4 (four!) more people working in the health service.

Comment by Patricia on October 10, 2018 at 1:13pm

The biggest problem with waiting lists is the government cutbacks.....closing OR's, not putting out the money to hire staff, medical staff shortages because not enough graduates stay here because salary is better elsewhere...…& on & on. The fires may have contributed, but not a huge amount.

We still have fires burning & we can smell the smoke occasionally, but they are under control.
