Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Climate demonstration today. The funniest placard - 'winter bathers against warmer water'

How nice that you all sing to children!

Thanks, Joan. However, I'm not so sure about your designation. I often think that I'm somewhat selfish in many respects. I fight that inclination. I did offer to babysit my 3 yr old grandson for today while the rest of his family goes to the Farmers Market. That will curtail my usual routines. But, actually, I'm looking forward to spending quality time with the little munchkin. He IS my "sunshine"!

Ian, my Dad sang, "You are my sunshine," as far back as I can remember.

I enjoy learning of your daughter's husband's first words, "Don't worry, be happy." What a wonderful spirit in which to grow.

Thank you for the compliment, Joan. My daughter enjoyed me singing to her when she was small, even though I can't sing. One of her first words was 'sunshine' because I sang 'You are my sunshine'. Her husband's first words ever, according to the family story were 'Don't worry, be happy' because that song was a hit at the time.

Ian, your time with James will begin to sink into his memory bank and he will carry your gentleness and love as a grandfather throughout his whole life. Your harmonica playing and his hearing your sounds reach a place that other events do not. There is something magic about singing.

Singing, dancing, whistling, humming, tongue twisters, rapping, all have studies and their interface with infants. After reading a bunch of studies, I can only say, JUST DO IT/THEM WITH INFANTS. Here is just one study.

~ “the ability to perceive and enjoy music is an inborn human trait” (Sousa, 2011, p. 221).

You, too, are a Cookie Person and a very important part of James' mental and emotional health.

Randy, I agree, children can be great fun if they live in healthy, happy communities. Children who live in conflicted homes and unhappy families carry a heavy burden.

Being a retired teacher, I know you have experienced such wounded children. While working at Morning Star Boys' Ranch I came to recognize the importance of what I call, "Cookie People," those individuals in the lives of troubled children who listened and communicated with the child. The Cookie Person could be a grandparent, a mail person, a school teacher, or a neighbor. The troubled boys who had one in his community had a better chance of doing well after his time at MSBR. I didn't document the impression I had at the time and regret that I didn't do that kind of study while working there.

Knowing you, you are surely a "Cookie Person!"

Tom, adulthood often becomes rush to plan the weekly menu for the family, rush to the store and try to stay inside my budget, rush to get to the doctor or dentist in time, rush to fill my pill boxes before I run out, rush to get the dinner prepared in time to suit everyone's needs, rush to get out of the kitchen before 9:00 PM, rush to get the laundry done for everyone and not get a wool sock mixed up in the hot water load, rush to clean up messes others make and leave behind, rush to get to bed before 10:00 PM.
Ya! Adulthood is different than childhood. When I have the company of my great-granddaughter, I can see and smell the flowers.
