Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

bending truth, or "We Can All Be Manipulated" (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat Jul 30. 42 Replies

The following is one of TheraminTrees' most thorough-going pieces, wherein he looks at the process and techniques whereby a "religious" organization (which will sound VERY familiar to most of us, once introductions are made!) takes a person who…Continue

Evangelicals Breaking Up with Jesus (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat May 28. 10 Replies

Has evangelical Christianity lost sight of Christ?  Seems to me that there are a whole lot of evangelical Christians who are presuming to represent Jesus by not representing him or misrepresenting him or – let's be honest here – talking out of their…Continue

Thanks for the summary, Ian. "a constant harping on 'power', 'force' and 'terror' as the only means of gaining political ends".

Never saw Lazarus, so I can't comment on that.

Yesterday at the theatre to see 'Lazarus', the David Bowie musical. Oh dear. Not good at all. No identifiable plot and I couldn't work out who some of the characters were. It just didn't work as theatre. The songs were well played although I missed Robert Fripp's guitar and Tony Visconti's bass. To be fair, I was probably alone in my opinion this evening. There was thunderous applause from everybody else in the auditorium. I have checked reviews from around the world and there I'm in the majority. Most give thumbs down.

After many attempts over the years I've finally finished reading 'Mein Kampf'. It's a good cure for insomnia but in the current political climate with nationalism on the rise I thought I would look at a primary source. Some points:
1) As the editor points out, the childhood parts are full of spin. AH was a poor student at secondary school (asked to leave twice) and mediocre at art there.
2) There are absurd claims. International finance and capitalism, democracy, parliamentarism etc are parts of a Marxist plot! Germany can only survive by expanding and that means eastward.
3) Religion. A deity is sworn by and called upon ('by the living God'), Teutons are God's true image, 'Lord bless our arms, God bless our battles' is the true prayer. There's great admiration for the Roman Catholic church for sticking to dogma in the face of science.
4) There are only claims and assertions and not one attempt to produce evidence or a rational argument in support of any of them.
5) The most disturbing and nauseating is a constant harping on 'power', 'force' and 'terror' as the only means of gaining political ends. The NSDAP had to destroy many other Nationalist groupings to come out on top. 'Rule the streets, rule the state.'
In the main, it's a boring, rambling book. The English translator's notes say that a great effort is needed to sort out the long, convoluted sentences and terrible grammar.
Now I've done it so perhaps you don't have to.

What does Atheist Nexus offer to people who find it on the web.

Info about a life free of religion and support for people who want a life free of religion.

Rather than post an essay here, I will risk starting a discussion I hope will win interest.

I wonder why so many really good participants left A/N and miss them. Barbara is one. She wore herself out with trying to do too much and left the gardening group; I wish she had resumed in this group. Daniel wanted a gentler group and I can see his point.

People leave without telling us why they make the decision to leave. Are we too political? Too focused on cursing god and religion? Too issues oriented? Too ????

I like participating because I like each one who joins with us. The trips, the ideas, the sharing gives me hope that there will be a tomorrow.

I especially like the discussions of the issues. I always learn something from them. I don't like what I read, but I would rather know what happens, the pros and cons, the search for remedies.

Ruth offers a treasure trove of events about which I want to know.

Each one of you members feels like family to me. Please don't leave without saying "goodbye!"
