Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Degrees of Doubt: The Claims and Credentials of Ravi Zacharias (The Thinking Atheist)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Chris May 17. 1 Reply

Anyone here ever run onto an apologist by the name of Ravi Zacharias?  I've seen his name dropped multiple times on YouTube as supposedly being THE ONE APOLOGIST that no atheist wants to cross swords with, because of his facility with christian…Continue

attacking ideas (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat Apr 4. 1 Reply

Attacking ideas is a considerable portion of what we as atheists do.  Why attack ideas?  Ideas earn attack when they don't serve people, not just us but those who adopt said ideas, mistakenly thinking that they have value when they don't.  Our…Continue

bending truth, or "We Can All Be Manipulated" (TheraminTrees)

The following is one of TheraminTrees' most thorough-going pieces, wherein he looks at the process and techniques whereby a "religious" organization (which will sound VERY familiar to most of us, once introductions are made!) takes a person who…Continue

The Playboy Interview: Richard Dawkins

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Loren Miller Mar 28. 16 Replies

I suppose it was the news that Playboy magazine was returning nudes to its pages after a year's hiatus that sufficiently perked my curiosity to check them out again.  I hadn't looked at Playboy since perhaps 2008, when I began to recognize that I…Continue

A cartfull of bad trouble in your family, Ian! It doesn't feel good when your help is unwanted, but it doesn't mean you are unwanted.

Comment by Randall Smith on February 17, 2015 at 7:39am

Yikes, Ian. Perhaps a phone call, email, or letter might be appropriate and appreciated. Shows you're thinking of them.

Yes, I had a feeling we'd lose Mindy. I'm still in a state of shock over all the fuss. On my old blog site, I made a mortal enemy when I mentioned the words "will power" when trying to lose weight, like "you gotta have...". Now, I can make new enemies over here!

Ian, sorry to learn of your family members with a lung infection, another with heart irregularities at 22 y.o., a collapsed lung in their 17 y.o. nephew., an elderly father in a care home, and their dog, old, ailing and incontinent. It sounds as though they need quiet and rest. Perhaps there is another way you can give them support and encouragement. The information that now is not a good time for you to visit them reflects respect for you, even as you could help in some way.

With all that you list indicates these are long term problems and they may need your help at some future time. In the meantime, keep yourself healthy, your spirits up, and focus on letting them know you are available when/if they need you.

I'm glad you shared your feelings with us; this is a good place to express your disappointment.

I'd give your family their space, Ian. I know when I'm sick I don't really want company. It can be stressful to have visitors, even people you love, when your stress level is already over the top. Thanks for sharing.

Something personal. Feeling a bit rejected. I mailed my brother and his wife about going over and they've asked me not to. Everything bad seems to be happening to them. My sister in law has had 2 weeks in bed with a lung infection. Their eldest son is being checked and scanned for heart irregularities (he's 22) Their 17 y.o. nephew is in hospital with a collapsed lung. My s-i-l's dad is now in a care home. The dog is old, ailing and almost incontinent. I understand that they don't want to entertain guests but also felt that as family I could support or help in some way. I must allow them that they know best what they can and can't cope with amid an avalanche of woes. They're really feeling the pressure. Makes all my problems seem petty in comparison.

That's better: got that off my chest.

No, not going to Copenhagen. It's a long and expensive trip.

I too would like to hear from Carl again. He's going through a hard time and I'm concerned.

Comment by Joan Denoo on February 16, 2015 at 1:57pm

I haven't heard from Carl since he sent me a message that he wanted to discuss the video with everyone but didn't have the energy at that time. I haven't heard from him since.

I am no longer able to contact Mindy. She had given me her Facebook information and we had some very special conversations until my responses to her were blocked.

I am sorry that I raised the question and that I tried to find what really happened. My concern backfired on me big time.

Carl, I am concerned about you, I hope you feel better. I especially look forward to seeing you able to get on with whatever the doctors advice. You are the same age as my three children and I kind of think of you as family. I apologize to you if I contributed to your distress.

Waving to Carl.

Are you going to the Kopenhagen meeting, Ian?

Thanks for all the good comments about my chicken x road posts. It's nice when my specific sense of humor matches others.

Carl, I hope all this kerfuffle about your spinning dog post hasn't added to your pain.
