Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Speak English? YOU FIRST! (Betty Bowers)

Honestly, the title to this piece is badly under-representative of the content.  To be far more accurate, what we have here is Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, going on a rant.  Before you say it ... Say WHAAAA?  Betty Bowers ranting? …Continue

10 Things About Patriotism (Betty Bowers)

It seems as though lately, Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, is evolving into America's Best Patriot.  She has recently been taking some fairly well-aimed shots at a certain Orange Nightmare and his sycophantic hangers-on, regarding the…Continue

A Prayer for Our Nation (Betty Bowers)

I'm going to keep this one short and sweet.  Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, has seen what is going on with the current occupant of the Oval Office, and my impression is that she is not at all happy with it.  True to her citizenship,…Continue

I invite my "Hang with Friends" to join "Origins: Universe, Life, Humankind, and Darwin" where Dr. Terence Meaden leads another fine group of writers. A current discussion occurs there based on "The Bible is not Great by Soren Sagan".

Sagan tells the story of why the bible and religion spew out toxins.

I toured Turkey, Greece and Crete with Riane Esler and Marija Gimbutas. During lectures at each site, Riane and Marja stressed that the opposite of patriarchy and the dominator society is not matriarchy and dominance but partnership. There exists a very different language between the styles, a different organizational design, and different values.

We have to understand the matrix into which into which we enter the world and define and create a pattern of preference.

Riane Eisler, in her earlier book, The Chalice and the Blade, speaks of the shift from matrilineal social structures of the Neolithic Age to patriarchal rule of the Bronze Age.

Her later book, The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics defines wealth in terms other than money.

The Power of Partnership describes why partnership creates a more powerful way to work as a community than working alone or as a cog in the wheel.

We now can see our history in precise terms defined in ways other than religion, and a plan to create a healthier, more responsible way of perceiving humankind and our place in the universe.

Randall, I did book one about 5 years ago. One of the best getaways I've ever been to. I'm just concerned that the place will get overrun with KFC's, McDonalds and Burger Kings. Glad I saw it before that happens.

Then again, who am I to bitch. They've got as much right to obesity and type 2 diabetes as any red (and cholesterol thick) blooded American.

Soren, son of Carl?!! I had no idea. What an honor to have you join us!  Again, welcome!

Has anybody booked a flight to Havanna yet?! Can you believe those myopic Republicans?

Comment by Pat on December 18, 2014 at 6:04am

Glad to hear that Carl.

Good news, Carl! And wonderful that your sister wants to be your donor!

Welcome Soren!

And thanks for the Moose in the maple tree Patricia, it makes very good teaching material!

Carl, happy to learn you returned home from the hospital. Good news that one of your sisters may be a kidney donor for you. You fill my thoughts throughout the day, just as so many of us feel connected to you in a very personal way. Our tight little virtual family radiate care for one another. Each moment gifts us with the opportunity to participate in life.

May I recall a line from Soren's piece, Lessons of Immortality and Mortality from my Father, Carl Sagan
"You’re connected to the generations through DNA — and, even farther back, to the universe, because every cell in your body was cooked in the hearts of stars. We are star stuff".

The mystery that comes from realizing we are star stuff, also reflects the mystery that comes from realizing we are connected to each other.

Just a little blip on the road Carl. The good news is your kidney should come through. My youngest sister in law had a very successful kidney transplant from an anonymous donor many years ago. I'm certain yours will be equally successful.
If kind thoughts and well wishes can help you have it made.
