Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Speak English? YOU FIRST! (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Donald R Barbera Sep 27. 5 Replies

Honestly, the title to this piece is badly under-representative of the content.  To be far more accurate, what we have here is Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, going on a rant.  Before you say it ... Say WHAAAA?  Betty Bowers ranting? …Continue

10 Things About Patriotism (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Plinius Sep 26. 2 Replies

It seems as though lately, Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, is evolving into America's Best Patriot.  She has recently been taking some fairly well-aimed shots at a certain Orange Nightmare and his sycophantic hangers-on, regarding the…Continue

A Prayer for Our Nation (Betty Bowers)

I'm going to keep this one short and sweet.  Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, has seen what is going on with the current occupant of the Oval Office, and my impression is that she is not at all happy with it.  True to her citizenship,…Continue

@ Joan - sure, glad you liked it.

Felaine, what a remarkable story. I hated driving the souther tier of the US because of all the signs, "Whites Only", "Blacks enter in back". Defacto slavery still existed and the whole nation suffers from it.

Patricia, I suppose I should smear that sunscreen on as well, but at my age, I don't worry much anymore.  I keep buying the stuff, but never put it on.  Who says I'm always rational?

Bertold, your November poem is a keeper! I'm passing it on. May I attribute it to you on Facebook and Twitter?

Dear Spud, you DO remember segregation, don't you?

When I was touring with HOI, we played a LOT of cities in the South, and some of the "jumps" from town to town were at night after a performance via Greyhound, or some other bus company.

In 1957 one of the other girls had picked up a dark tan in Mexico and Cuba (That was the last year the show played Havana), and she was still quite tan 3 months later when we were playing Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia.  I've forgotten which town we were leaving (those towns were ghastly and very forgettable), but one of the bus drivers refused to let her get back on on the bus after a "rest stop."  At all.  He was screaming the "n-word" at her.  We had to sit around for hours, in the middle of the night, while phone calls were made to Atlanta, New York, and Minneapolis.  I don't know who said what to whom, but we finally got another driver for that bus; I don't know if the driver was fired by the company or what. (He should have been!)

It's totally irrelevant, but Judy was a blonde, of Scandinavian ancestry, but to that ignorant redneck driver she was unfit to ride in his company's bus because she had a tendency to tan.

In the '50s tanning was a BIG deal for young (and not so young) women.  There was no such thing as sunscreen; we just used baby oil, and baked ourselves at the beach, or by a pool.  And I do have "age spots," and scaly spots all over myself.  I have also had several very dark moles removed in the past...none were malignant.

Felaine, that sounds like a scary situation.

Chris, I know exactly what you go through with migraines.  I went many years suffering from debilitating headaches.  Loud sounds and bright light would be utterly painful.  Throbbing pain and vomiting.  Luckily I was able to find a medication that ended them completely.  I haven't had a headache in years.

Spud, glad you got treatment for your facial growths.  I'm sure it will be nice to have the itchiness and bumps gone.  I've been lucky myself that I haven't had any skin cancer.  I'm the typical blond, blue-eyed, fair-skinned Scandinavian type who spent summers growing up without using sunscreen.

A little something by Thomas Hood:

No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon -
No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day.
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member -
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! -
November!

I love the look of milky-white skin on a girl.  But even a naturally dark-skinned gal is more attractive than a light-skinned one that has tanned herself dark.

That's funny Felaine.  I never thought of the fact that tanning your bod in the south could get you sent to the back of the bus or worse.
