Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

The Most Hated Woman in America (The Thinking Atheist)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Gary S on Thursday. 7 Replies

Before Aron Ra and Matt Dillahunty, before Dawkins or Dennett or Harris or even Hitchens, there was Madalyn Murray O'Hair.  In the midst of an America where Christianity was being flaunted as a defense against the godless communists of the Soviet…Continue

attacking ideas (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat Apr 4. 1 Reply

Attacking ideas is a considerable portion of what we as atheists do.  Why attack ideas?  Ideas earn attack when they don't serve people, not just us but those who adopt said ideas, mistakenly thinking that they have value when they don't.  Our…Continue

bending truth, or "We Can All Be Manipulated" (TheraminTrees)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat Apr 4. 40 Replies

The following is one of TheraminTrees' most thorough-going pieces, wherein he looks at the process and techniques whereby a "religious" organization (which will sound VERY familiar to most of us, once introductions are made!) takes a person who…Continue

The Playboy Interview: Richard Dawkins

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Loren Miller Mar 28. 16 Replies

I suppose it was the news that Playboy magazine was returning nudes to its pages after a year's hiatus that sufficiently perked my curiosity to check them out again.  I hadn't looked at Playboy since perhaps 2008, when I began to recognize that I…Continue

Of course, Joan, but you'll find that there are many more who have seen the same pattern. Watch the old footage by Leni Riefenstahl and you'll see it even without subtitles. Trump is busy selecting scapegoats and promising which groups he's going to put in their place, so you can just wait until he comes to put you in your place. Don't wave the warning signs away - Hitler was democratically chosen...

Plinius, may I quote you about the reference to the Reb. convention and Hitler. I can use "anonymous from the Netherlands" if you think that shields you, or whatever way you want to be attributed.

You can interpret Hitler, I suppose so that you hear the inflections and see his gestures as you understand what he says. We need to know that!

I saw as much of the republican convention as I wanted, enough to feel sick. It seemed to me a copy of Hitler's nazi party conventions in the 30s: speeches that touch the emotions and not the reason, bullying of party members who want to stop and think, demanding blind support of all, or else...

I'm so happy that I'm not American - but you are stuck with the trouble.

Randall, I do, or don't do about the same as you.  I had no desire to listen to the Republican convention, and didn't.  I also watch very little TV.  I can't stomach most of what people say or do anymore as well.  I keep myself informed mostly by reading what you atheists have to say, and to a lesser extent going to the articles you refer me to.  That reduces my stress, depression, and makes life is much more pleasant for me as well.

Joan, I know you are just offering the idea of salad.

I'm glad you're still able to work in your garden to some degree.

When I was accessing the net at the library, I didn't have enough time to read everything, and so didn't know for sure you had moved back to your place, or why.  Since getting an Internet Service Provider again, I've been catching-up with a lot of posts, and I'm glad to see that you didn't have trouble with your family.

I don't think I'll ever read all the posts I missed.  I have about 1700 emails waiting to be read.  I'll just delete most of the older ones.

At least, Kuwait has low humidity, so evaporation from the body should keep them cool enough, as long as they drink enough.

I do own a television set, but have quit watching the "nightly news". I go for an after-dinner walk instead. It's better for my digestive system and blood pressure. I watched a total of 5 minutes of the republican convention. It's all I could stomach. I'm getting more ignorant of what's going on in the world as I get older. Life is much more pleasant as a result!

I'm sure 54°C will kill many people.  Those that can't get enough water, or have to do much physical activity.  Also some of those that don't realize that thirst is not a reliable indicator of need for water.

Ruth, I also "much prefer getting news on the internet over other forms. I can focus on science and other topics of interest, without wasting time on crap like celebrities or trivia."

Ian, Damn!

"When Barack Obama visited EU headquarters in March, he had stern words in public – and even stronger remarks in private, according to senior diplomats – for Europe's leaders, telling them they had to risk the wrath of their voters and go for fracking and shale gas to help immunise Europe against Russian blackmail.

(emphasis mine)

Obama emphasized, "to help immunize Europe against Russian blackmail."

Obama should have emphasized getting off fossil fuel as fast as possible and developing renewable and sustainable energy sources.

Well, the next thing is for the public to rise and insist the government make decisions based on science, not on profits!!!

We have got to get noisy, march, lobby like crazy. People will call us names; so what? I have been called every name in the book, and I still rise. I can't do what I did in 1968, but I surely can make noises.

During the 2012 Seattle riots, an old lady became too pushy, and the police maced her. That picture of an old woman, maced, went viral.

Raimy was her name. I Googled, "Seattle riots old lady maced Raimy" and this is what I find:

"Seattle Police Pepper Spray 84-Year-Old Activist, Priest, Pregnant Woman, Among Others

BY LEE FANG NOV 16, 2011 9:00 AM"
