Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

10 Tricks from 46 (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Ruth Anthony-Gardner Nov 6, 2017. 3 Replies

Apparently, Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, has been slumming.  That is to say, she's been talking to Mike Pence [gasp!].  It would seem as though Mike has offered some of his not-so-personal tricks of the trade on how to be a 21st century…Continue

Speak English? YOU FIRST! (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Donald R Barbera Sep 27, 2017. 5 Replies

Honestly, the title to this piece is badly under-representative of the content.  To be far more accurate, what we have here is Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, going on a rant.  Before you say it ... Say WHAAAA?  Betty Bowers ranting? …Continue

10 Things About Patriotism (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Plinius Sep 26, 2017. 2 Replies

It seems as though lately, Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, is evolving into America's Best Patriot.  She has recently been taking some fairly well-aimed shots at a certain Orange Nightmare and his sycophantic hangers-on, regarding the…Continue

You're special, saving things from your mother's time! I don't, but I treasure the things I bought and found forty years ago when I started  on my own. That was such an exciting time! Even the garlic press I bought then and still use reminds me of it. All the rest disappeared, the hand-me-downs of course but even most of the old pictures. Nice, that feeling that there's nothing left rotting in corners!

Daniel, I can't believe the nonsense you're having to go through with your kitchen.  I do like NIng's suggestion to modify your ruler.  That gave me a laugh.  Yes, you appear to be taking this whole situation in stride.  So much so that it sounds like you're actually looking forward to the project!  Though I could be wrong.

Joan, the videos you posted are beautiful.  Love the scenery!  How wonderful that you have your mother's pie pan.  Family heirlooms like that mean so much and continue the bonds of family through the generations.

Chicago has had a dramatic 40% rise in the rat population this year because of last year's mild winter.  Many people and groups are using feral cats to stem the tide, but I'm a bit suspect on how effective they will be.  Easy food-pickings are available any place there are dumpsters, garbage cans and litter.  Why would a cat chase down a rat if there's stationary food available?  Plus, a lot of people here put out food regularly for feral cats.  In reality, Chicago also has an overpopulation problem with feral cats!

Like a lot of people in this group, I'm also avoiding much of the political news.  I'll look at the headlines to see what's going on and only read a story if it seems utterly important.  Trump has already flip-flopped on so many issues on a daily basis that it's actually a waste of time to follow his antics in depth.  To be honest, as horrible and frightening it is to have Trump as president, I'm more scared of the people he's choosing to have around him.  I think they can do the most damage in the long run.

Kathy, angry, disgusted, fed up, and concerned. Yes, that sounds like my feelings, too.

Kathy, I admire your boldness as well.

Randy, I'm like you in that respect.

Joan, not to worry. I'm not depressed in any clinical sense. Words like angry,

disgusted, fed up, and concerned would be more accurate.

I'm with Randall and Chris on the news strike. It's unbearable. The speculation started as soon as Obama was elected to his last term. Who was going to run the next time.
We never seem to get a break from political guessing games and theories.
And we never seem to get any real news. I use BBC, pbs, vice, and newspapers from all over the world.
I've got to get a couple more ffrf shirts so I can offend everyone :)

Daniel,

If you do not have one, I recommend you buy yourself a sawzall. I've use mine to cut nails, metals, wood, holes, and I've it to prune trees and roots, cut wood for boarders around the garden, cut  firewood. Also it came handy to remove tiles and caulking.

Sawzal would be on my top ten tools must haves.

You could call yourself a realist, Randall, because the news ís depressing. I skim the news, I read background regularly, but I don't want to know about the daily bitching and biting. Much healthier...

Comment by Randall Smith on November 20, 2016 at 7:54am

While I don't suffer from clinical depression, local and worldly news does depress me. Therefore, I've made a decision to avoid the news and remain ignorant of all the negativity going on "out there". I know it's wrong, but for my own sanity, my head is in the sand.

Kathy, I admire your boldness (wearing the FFRF shirt)! And I thought I was being bold wearing a Bernie t-shirt.

Ruth, I wrote my comment about depression about the same moment as you wrote yours. I hear you and know of which you write. How to shuffle off the coil of depression with all the chaos enveloping us, I too, wonder about those others before us who faced sudden change in their lives caused by events beyond their control to change.
